Eduardo Moltó:
between designing and making audiovisual

Great black fabrics turned the 23 and 12 Art Gallery of El Vedado into a perfect dark chamber to exhibit in a rigorous audiovisual synthesis the work of Cuban artist Eduardo Moltó.

The exhibition titled "All inclusive" includes three shows about the different facets of his work. The retrospective is divided into his graphic work (posters, books and logos), two-dimensional work (paintings and animated photograph), video art and body painting.

This December, after twenty years, he returns to the same gallery where he made a personal exhibition for the first time to surprise us with a selection of the most significative works of the artistic lines he has worked with. This time, the only medium he uses is the audiovisual, a language he has been using recurrently in the last years.

Concessions or the tiredness of a style has never characterized his work. His designs, that show the mark of other outstanding Cuban artists like René Azcuy, Raúl Martínez and Umberto Peña, -with whom he shared a creative space for a while- are characterized by their originality, audacity and renovative style.

Even when his work has been marked by the dichotomy between designing and making audiovisual, both have always been present. It´s impossible to talk about digital and video art in Cuba without mentioning Moltó. It´s not fair either to talk about the great designers in Cuba without including his name. He´s focused right now on a book that includes huge part of Cuban composer Silvio Rodríguez´ work.

Human beings have always been the center of attention of Eduardo´s aesthetic. The recurrent use of the human body shows this. However, in his most recent works he has gone from singularity to multiplicity, variations of a theme that has made emphasis on what´s feminine based on existential concerns and emotive explorations as reflected by the 16 pieces that form show Tramas y subtramas –exhibited in Mexico last October-, devoted to feminine beauty and sensuality.

This proposal invites to revisit Moltó´s work based on a multiplication of articulated, juxtaposed and assembled images created by this talented and singular artist of Cuban contemporary art that purifies his art by means of a personal maxim that says: Designing could even be a trade, perhaps. However, designing with artistic criterion will always be my biggest challenge.
