Review of an article published in [Cuban daily] Juventud
Rebelde on the so-called metrosexuals
I was disappointed
to read an article published last Sunday, November 11 in the
newspaper Juventud Rebelde where these youths who break
away from the traditional male aesthetics are not defended, but
questioned.

I read an article published last Sunday,
November 11 by the Cuban daily Juventud Rebelde that was
a real letdown, so much so when this newspaper has usually, and
successfully, stayed away from the regular blindness to our
problems, so typical of Cuba’s mainstream media. The topic of
this article is now a “problem” to be solved. Even its title –Aumentan
hombres que usan atributos femeninos (Women’s attributes are
growing more and more successful with men) (1)– reveals the
authors’ prejudice.
They
present us with this concept of the issue: “But
how has metrosexuality been perceived? It was British journalist
Mark Simpson who, in 1994, who used the term to define the
bearing of a young man living in a metropolis, fond of
sophistication, mindful of his body, wearing designer clothing
and ready to have his nails done without a qualm. According to
Simpson, metrosexuals take themselves as their own love objects
and are obsessed with being trendy. The New York Times wrote a
short time later: «These are impatient, uniform men willing to
embrace their feminine side».”
I
won’t use another name for those individuals who choose to
change man’s traditional appearance, in the same way that the
so-called Gray quinquennium, dark as it was, can’t be
labeled differently either. Nor do I deny the effects of the
market and globalization on fashion and the way people modify
their outward aspect. But what the authors suggest in this case
is that the rules must be respected, and therefore what’s
feminine has to remain so instead of being also embraced by some
men to boot. They portray the so-called metrosexuals as
superficial people dangerously bent on breaking manhood’s
conventional rules.
In
the beginning of this piece we read:
Who knows if
it’s because of a trick in the dictionaries or just common sense
playing a practical joke; «beautiful» men, however, feel
absolutely at ease with themselves.
Apparently, there are no good-looking or beautiful men (much as
the term is avoided to refer to men, especially by men
themselves). And those who feel beautiful, “however,
feel absolutely at ease with themselves.” Woe betide a man
fully pleased with his physique! As stated by these authors, he
should be anything but.
Further on they say: “Perhaps if we look to the past we’ll see that the whole thing about being
handsome or otherwise is nothing but people’s eagerness to be
accepted by their peers, grant themselves a certain social
recognition, or make it to the top of public glory”.
According to this, everything related to a man’s physical
well-being boils down to what other people think, as if
self-complacency didn’t mean anything.
What follows left us speechless: “…a short walk down the
streets in Havana will suffice to have our eyes hit by
the frequent sight of men with shaven arms and legs, polished
nails, plucked eyebrows, earrings and other –until very
recently– female attributes.” Could it be that the terrible
censors of every individual’s right to aesthetic freedom are
making a comeback? The authors point out that an image so
much at odds with your traditional manly outlook suffices to
hurt our eyes like a bullet. Maybe it hurts them, but only
because their mind had been damaged before and they find it hard
to adapt to any change they deem unacceptable. It’s unbelievable
to hear them say that a man wearing earrings is a present-day
sight when everybody knows that men have worn earrings and long
hair since the dawn of Civilization. The latter was again in
full swing in the 1960s but it’s no longer a common thing even
among metrosexuals, while the former –including the hoop type–
have been widely used by youth for over a decade. I don’t think
wearing lipstick is so widespread, at least among the Cuban
metrosexuals.
Dissenting viewpoints are offered by experts and ordinary people
alike. A university student remarks: “by mistaking culture
for freedom they are breaking the mold of Cuban manhood.”
That’s right, the rejection is exclusive to other age groups:
some young people, and I’m including the authors themselves,
look askance at those intent on changing their looks.
Over and over again, metrosexuality is blamed on the market and
globalization, so concerned about selling more as to try to lure
men into buying beauty products, and the market is held to be
what draws the line between masculine and feminine. Someone
explains that “We
all like to take care of our hair, and there are things for
every age and every stage. We sell to all kinds of people, from
young men eager to dye their hair blonde to older ones looking
for products to cover their white hair or asking about something
to prevent hair loss.”
The authors remark, not without irony:
Anti-wrinkle
creams, hair implants, nail polish, lipstick... a whole range of
products for men which would have been a big plus for the Grimm
brothers’ male characters and a good reason for Snow White’s
stepmother to go pale with jealousy. The beauty industry has led
men to wonder who is the fairest man of all and answered the
question for them: «all men are fair, but none are as fair as
the metrosexuals»
As
stated by the vice dean of the Psychology School, there’s an
urgent need for change that places more emphasis on autonomy as
far as physical beauty is concerned.
I
agree with the assertion that we can change on the outside
without changing on the inside. In other words, these people
have not given up machismo of necessity. However, I believe it
will be easier for them to do it because they are already
overcoming the barriers of prejudice.
At
the end of the article a teenager is quoted as saying: «When
you publish this piece in the paper give me a copy, I want to
show it to my dad because he won’t let me wear several colors on
my hair».
I hope his father never did, lest ideological prejudice come on top
of his sexism, since we’ve been told men wish to change like
this because they are light-hearted, market-driven people. Now
those who take no wimpish behavior from their boys at school
have a piece of paper –another one– to lean on.
I
wonder whether a woman who decides not to put on any makeup and
flaunt her natural, feminine beauty instead will also be the
target of these new censors.
Three years ago, the same newspaper published an article (2)
which ended like this: “The blame for men’s choice of this
market offer does not lie entirely with the advertising
agencies, regardless of their flair for manipulation. Only those
subjective enough to fulfill the requirements of a metrosexual
will get hooked on these products. Accordingly, the traditional
male image is not in danger of extinction.” This will
hopefully ease the tension among those who reject the so-called
metrosexuals.
Another article (3) the same newspaper published in December
last year reads: “Suffice it to judge [men’s] changing
standards in their interpersonal relations: their audacity to
add «feminine» garments to their wardrobe and the new male’s
emotional deportment are by no means a reason to doubt their
sexual orientation. This phenomenon is not exclusive to the
Island, even if it comes as a surprise here more than in Europe
or elsewhere across the Americas. Nor is it a matter of fashion:
since the sexual revolution of the 1960s, much has been
theorized about a new kind of man, described as ‘soft’, who has
no qualms about being sensitive and places women on a level of
respectable equality instead of seeing them as a sexual prey”.
As
I said before, I think these individuals might still stick to
machismo, but that’s not the point. Let us not be sexist by
judging on their outward aspect. Mankind has suffered enough for
the changes it has refused to accept and the great deal of pain
it has inflicted on those it has failed to understand. Cuba in
particular has endured that kind of attitude, its vestiges still
fresh in our memory. Yet, may those relics, like in [Cuban
songwriter] Silvio Rodríguez’s says, never become obstacles to
springtime.

Metrosexuality according to Perdomo:
in reply to his recent
review
A professional
critic’s bloodstream ought to be less poisoned in the first
place. That’s the reason for this richly deserved reply to
Perdomo’s Review of an article published in [Cuban daily]
Juventud Rebelde on the so-called metrosexuals, which we
recently read here.
By Sander Zaila (for KaosenlaRed)
Sometimes the
life of a critic, or of those who call themselves as such, turns
out to be actually pathetic. No offense meant, Mr. Perdomo, but
it’s clear, even to the least voracious reader, that nothing in
this piece causes speechlessness, horror or the sense of
suppression that you say to have felt when you read it. Let me
tell you that, for starters, in order to be a good critic you
need first of all to have in-depth knowledge of the subject.
That’s why the reasons for your disappointment since the very
beginning of that article are not well grounded, insofar as you
fail to understand that it’s not the title of the printed
version.
You wrote: «What the authors suggest in this case is that the
rules must be respected, and therefore what’s feminine has to
remain so instead of being also embraced by some men to boot.
They portray the so-called metrosexuals as superficial people
dangerously bent on breaking manhood’s conventional rules».
Well, nowhere in their article does it say that metrosexuality
is a dangerous thing or that its followers are superficial
people. It’s simply a question of a term applied in the Cuban
context as it was initially conceived, without creating
prejudice. It’s only natural to find a variety of opinions about
this phenomenon, since not everybody likes bread and avocado.
But nothing is forbidden.
«Woe betide a man fully pleased with his physique! As stated
by these authors, he should be anything but». Did any of them say so? What they stress
is that ever since the word ‘beauty’ came into being we have
been able to divide everything that exists from its ugly
opposite and, as a result, sometimes being beautiful leaves us
stranded on the hedonistic and narcissistic conception of beauty
when it’s something more than just «what looks nice».
Now
this is superficial: «According to the article,
everything related to a man’s physical well-being boils down to
what other people think, as if self-complacency didn’t mean
anything». Of course it matters, but to what extent?
That you don’t dwell on.
That something hurts the public eye like a bullet DOES NOT mean
that it hurts public opinion too. It’s just an uncommon thing
according to the norms of behavior we’ve been raised to learn,
but not necessarily a wrong habit you should never embrace. Nor
is anything in the making to abolish the said practice. And it’s
not the authors who say that image breaks away with man’s
traditional image: it’s the general public, as the story’s
leading character, who has the floor instead.
«That’s right, the rejection is exclusive to other age
groups: some young people, and I’m including the authors
themselves, look askance at those intent on changing their
looks». Don’t make me laugh. Do you know any of the said authors? You
surely don’t, because one of them is metrosexuality personified.
It’s not quite clear to me why you mention the excellent irony
they use to describe capitalism’s consumeristic and monopolistic
machinery.
And
do you really think an eighteen-year-old boy brought up on the
‘men-don’t-cry’ premise will change his sexist views, let alone
his homophobic tenets, just because he wears an earring and
plucks his eyebrows? I don’t thinks so. Furthermore, keep in
mind that shaving is in fashion, even if they all swear it’s for
the sake of health, because the hairs bother them, etc. In
short, we used to be filthier and impervious to our hair. Fat
chance! It’s the result of an excessively overwhelming
globalization which looks after nothing but its own interests
and spares no one, including us Cubans.
Nice try, that of using Silvio as a closer, although nothing in
that article is an obstacle to springtime; rather, it explains
how the richness of our process is incorporating a phenomenon
that affects the whole world and tries to provide the readers
with a tool to link women’s fashion canons adopted by men to a
kind of conduct which leaves little room for doubt about their
sexual preference. Regardless, there’s always an implication
when it comes to interrelated masculine and feminine elements.
«Mankind has suffered enough for the changes it has refused
to accept and the great deal of pain it inflicted on those it
has failed to understand». You’re the one who didn’t understand. Pity that this article has
come to blemish Kaos’s usually good work.
Incidentally, what has the gray quinquennium got to do with
metrosexuality? Talk about people who love to live in the past
and make ill-timed comparisons! However, it takes a little of
everything to make the world go around, even intellectuals like
David Perdomo.

diario estadounidense The New York Times describiría poco
después: «Son hombres urbanos impacientes, uniformes,
dispuestos a abrazar sus lados femeninos».”
No
personas no sean machistas.

¿Alguno dijo
no importara.» Claro que importa
complacerse uno mismo, pero ¿hasta que punto? De eso
usted no habla.
metrosexual.
No me queda
