October at Ninety

Testimony to the universal validity of the Russian Revolution of October 1917 – ninety years after power was taken by the Bolshevik Party headed by Vladimir Ilich Lenin and Leon Trotsky – is the current direction of the struggle carried out by the peoples of our America for their independence and development.
After the disappearance of the Soviet Union – the workers and peasants state born from that historic event – however shameful the handling by its leaders, the United States, as the only remaining superpower, arrogantly proclaimed having also killed its ideas and an end to history.
Nothing could be further from the truth. October showed the way for human liberation which Marxism had identified and discovered other new ones. It lead the nation to great successes in the economic, political, cultural, social justice and military fields to transform itself, in a short time, from a backward and poor Russia to a world power.
It is true that it was plagued by errors, omissions, excesses and a poverty of ideas only justifiable by the defensive context it was forced to assume by the displaced exploiters of yesteryear in their attempt to break her back, and covert and overt imperialist actions which do not diminish responsibility for internal factors that determined its downfall.
October made the efforts and sacrifices of the peoples of the Soviet Union achieve a level of economic, military and scientific development and led to a dual polarity in the world which could become a beacon of progress for the poor nations of the planet.
The Cuban Revolution would not have been possible if the Bolshevik Revolution had not occurred before. In similar fashion, the current processes of change in Latin America and the Caribbean would not have occurred without a strong Cuban Revolution in power.
Without the solidarity and support of the Soviet Union, the Cuban revolution would have had to cut back its objectives to prevent a suicide after having overthrown the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista, backed by Washington.
As soon as the decision for a true independence of the victorious revolution was proclaimed, Washington prepared to attack the country with its powerful military, economic and media resources.
To answer the first armed aggressions by the United States, which used soldiers and civilians loyal to the defeated dictatorship as mercenaries, trained and armed by Washington, the Cuban revolution received its first weapons of war purchased from the Soviet Union.
Hours before the landing in the Bay of Pigs, in Playa Giron, the Commander-in-Chief, Fidel Castro, proclaimed the socialist character of the Revolution. Thus, it was for the homeland and – for the first time – for socialist ideology, that dozens of Cubans gave their lives in the bloody battle against the invaders.
After that, the spirit of October presided over the course of Cuban-Soviet relations which extended in all imaginable spheres with strong bonds of solidarity and mutual respect between the two sovereign nations linked through strong ideological ties and cast iron friendship.
With the disappearance of the Soviet Union in December of 1991, Cuba did not renounce the political and cultural legacy of the October Revolution – nor would it for any reason – not only rejecting treason and cowardice but because this is part of Cuba’s political culture and revolutionary anti-imperialism.
The imprint of the October Revolution is also present in the socialist and anti-imperialist currents which are gaining strength in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The construction of Socialism of the 21st century as a declared objective of state leaders and several political and social movements in our America which rises up is a confirmation of October's influence.
Essentially, the fundamental principles of Marxism and Leninism define the direction of Socialism of the 21st century, with the exclusion of those methods and elements, today understood, of historical experience that should be changed to prevent the dangers of dogmatism, bureaucracy, stagnation, abuses of power and other deviations that go against the humanist spirit which must be the basis of socialism under any circumstances.
The Great Socialist Revolution of October – begun on November 7, 1917 – which corresponds to October in the Gregorian calendar applied in Russia at the time – opened a new era for humanity, the step forward between scientific socialism to the human practice of socialism, as part of a process which necessarily will have ups and downs, errors and corrections because we are sure that at the end of the road it is the happiness of our species.

OCTUBRE A LOS
NOVENTA
