The vicar of Havana, Monsignor Carlos M. De Céspedes y García-Menocal, one of the men with highest intellectual weight in the Cuban church, sees no difficulty in “stable same-sex relationships” being “protected by civil law” but opposes the term “marriage” when applied to these relationships.

In a weighty article on the subject published by the journal Palabra Nueva (No. 165, July-August, 2007), of the Havana Archdiocese, De Cespedes affirms that contemporary western society is no longer the same and requires current clarifications on marriage”. He adds that the Church “is not going to renounce criteria established by elevation and set by tradition (...) but it cannot ignore contemporary personal and familial reality”.

The priest recognizes that “pluralism of points of view” in the West concerning the family, sex and marriage “tends to impose and includes criteria which go against those of the Church which cannot be waived. He gives examples such as the “contemporary ease of divorce”, and “recurrence of irresponsibility concerning abortion as a means to limit the family” and “same-sex relationships”, among others.

However, this writer and member of the Cuban Academy of Language does not consider it convenient that legal homosexual unions be designated marriage.

“In principle, for the simplest reasons of linguistic clarity, of two diverse realities, neither in this order or any other should they be identified by the same word” the priest explains, although he feels incapable of proposing a new term to qualify “legally and socially this new figure apparent in almost all modern nations.”

He also requests that the new word chosen “be well thought-out” and “not be accompanied by disrespectful connotations and, much less, derogatory toward relationships of homosexuals and lesbians”.

“Today we know that human reality is much more complex than what we thought and that the situation of Christianity in the world is not excessively flattering, not even in the so-called “Christian west” the priest added. He is one of the personages with greatest influence in Cuban Catholicism without being a bishop. And in this regard he predicts: “It does not seem that I will become one, at least in the near future”.

De Céspedes, 71 and author of “Érase una vez en La Habana and Aproximación y vigencia del padre Félix Varela” (Once upon a time in Havana, and Approximation and validity of father Félix Varela) quotes pope Benedict XVI who, in his opinion “is well aware” of the realities that relate “Faith and Theology with Reason”.

The Pope “insists that Christianity should not be presented like a long list of prohibitions, but positively”, the religious scholar notes in his column of Palabra Nueva.
