Caridad: one of the most obese women in Cuba
Caridad Agueda weighs 500 pounds. Her more than 500 pounds keep her health on the rack. She lives on the fourth floor and can't even go down the stairs.

Never have I seen sadder eyes, or a look so lost between tears and despair. We had talked on the phone before, and at first I thought it was just a bad joke. But I changed my mind as soon as I heard she was out of breath, her voice choked with emotion.
«I need you to come over to see me. I'm very sick, and even my soul is in pain. I've been a "prisoner" of my rocking chair for seven months now. I'm weighing around 500 pounds and no longer in control of my body».
All I managed was to ask her name and address, and tell her I would soon drop by. That's how I met Caridad Águeda Martín Ortega, 56, who lives in Havana's Playa municipality and has to cope not only with her more than 500 pounds -- she's considered to be among the fattest women in Cuba -- but also a long history of misunderstanding and frustration.
Not even as I tried to be nice could I see a smile on that face punished by suffering.
«I don't like to see me like this, much less be seen. Just look at these pictures of my wedding over 37 years ago. Every time I see them I burst into tears», she says, in her hand a photograph of a pretty girl of about a hundred pounds.
It's been more than 27 years ago since a wrong medical report and treatment made a botch of her hormones and she started to put on weight.
«I used to go see the doctor, but the last time I stood up from this rocking chair was on September 12 last year. I do everything here: it's where I sleep, eat and live», she states as she takes deep breaths, yearning for fresh air to keep on talking.
«Why don't you seek medical advice?»
«I can hardly move! The consultations I need are in the hospitals where they have the specialties. I can only go out carried by a crane of the fire department, and there's no way I'm going to climb on that thing, which I won't be able to withstand. I'd rather die here.
«When I began to get fatter and fatter I asked the relevant authorities to swap my three-bedroom apartment in Miramar for another on the main floor so as to make my visits to the doctors easier.
«Years have gone by without so much as a proposal from them to help me solve my problem. I turn to you because I can't take it anymore».
At this point Caridad showed us the
letters she has written to various Cuban entities, describing her
difficult situation and asking for a chance to move elsewhere.
A CRITICAL CASE
Juventud Rebelde visited most of the officials involved in the case at hand. «We're aware of Caridad Águeda Martín's problem and her medical condition. We know and acknowledge that a year is a long time to find a solution, but right now we don't have a three-bedroom apartment on the main floor like she wants, which makes everything all the more difficult», remarks Claudio Crespo Pulido, head of the Customer Service Department at Havana's Provincial Housing Bureau.
«She's right to appeal to all kinds of authority. I put myself in her place and I know she's not having it easy. As far as we're concerned, her situation is the first item in our agenda at every Provincial Commission meeting. It's a top priority among the more of 18,000 cases we have», he points out.
JR confirmed the existence of several houses in Playa municipality which meet Caridad's requirements, but neither the Municipal nor the Provincial Housing Bureau are entitled to give them to anyone.
«Registered in our Real Estate Control Department are 29 houses located in "frozen areas" yet to be assigned to anyone since 2004, but this administration is not entitled to issue any regulation about them», was Municipal Housing Bureau director Bárbara Valmaña Sobrino's word-for-word report to JR.
Still, Caridad is not demanding to stay within the same municipality where she lives now: «What I need is to be able to see a doctor and make it easier for my daughters to help me go to the hospital for consultations or emergencies. Of course, a place in Playa would be better, but nobody has ever made an official offer to move to another municipality», she assures.
Another inconsistency between Caridad's statements and the versions put forward by Municipal and Provincial Housing directors is related to the amount of time she has devoted to resolving her problem.
«Caridad's file for a house swap was opened in late 2004, and it's been kept in our office since day one», asserted Playa municipality's Housing director.
Caridad maintains she's been trying to find a new home for over 25 years, and assures that two years ago her documents were nowhere to be found in the Municipal Housing Bureau and she had therefore to reach out to the Provincial authority, because in the former they told her there was nothing they could do for her.
Even if it was not until 2004 that Ms. Águeda Martín's file was opened, it's too much time to unravel what the Customer Service Department at provincial level deems «a critical case».
Caridad's neighbors confirm that she's been trying for several years to have her house traded, and so does Bárbara Pelegrino, the People's Power delegate in her constituency.
«When I took over this position around two years ago, the outgoing delegate gave me Caridad's file as one urgent social case. We shared our concern with the president of the People's Council, who already knew about it. Helping Caridad out of her plight is everybody's wish around here», she added.
The president of the local Committee for
the Defense of the Revolution holds Caridad has been trying to get a new
house for around 20 years. «Our leadership often meets to discuss how
Caridad's problem is going. As a CDR member she cares about what we do,
and used to take part in everything when she still could».
DELICATE HEALTH
Caridad Águeda Martín Ortega's clinical condition is delicate, according to Dr. Tania Treto Cárdenas, director of the polyclinic Ana Betancourt, where Caridad is treated.
«In the last few years this patient has put on a considerable amount of weight. Her obesity is out of proportion, and she suffers from hypertension, excess cholesterol in blood, diabetes, abdominal problems caused by her weight, increased uric acid, umbilical hernia, and chronic synovitis in both knees, among other disorders.
«She's physically unable to walk up or down the stairs and only gets house calls as a result. Another major problem is that we can't measure her blood pleasure for lack of a sphygmomanometer big enough to go around her arm», Dr. Tania Treto underscores.
«How is this case solved from a clinical viewpoint?»
«She must be admitted to a hospital and treated by a multidisciplinary team. We've been familiar with her case for almost a year and told her so, but the mere mention of the firemen's crane gets her panicky. I understand her fears, but it's the only way we have to deal with it.
Caridad's tough living conditions have turned her home into a prison she can only flee from in her dreams.

«Necesito que usted venga a mi casa para que me vea. Estoy muy enferma y me duele hasta el alma. Hace siete meses estoy “presa” en un sillón. Tengo como 500 libras de peso y ya no controlo mi cuerpo».
Solo atiné a preguntar nombre, dirección y decirle que iría pronto. Así conocí a Caridad Águeda Martín Ortega, en el capitalino municipio de Playa, quien con 56 años carga, además de sus más de 500 libras —se le considera una de las mujeres más obesas de Cuba—, una larga lista de incomprensiones y frustraciones.
Ni aún intentando ser agradable pude ver una sonrisa en aquel rostro castigado por el sufrimiento.
«No me gusta verme así y menos que me vean. Mire estas fotos. Son de mi boda hace más de 37 años. Cada vez que las veo me echo a llorar», dice mientras me extiende una instantánea donde aparece una linda muchacha de unas cien libras de peso.
Hace más de 27 años un inadecuado dictamen médico y tratamiento afectó su funcionamiento hormonal y desde esa fecha comenzó a engordar.
«Antes iba a consultas, pero la última vez que me paré de este sillón fue el 12 de septiembre del pasado año. Aquí lo hago todo: duermo, como, vivo», dice mientras respira profundo, buscando aire para seguir hablando.
—¿Por qué no busca ayuda clínica?
—Casi no puedo moverme. Las consultas a las que tengo que ir son a nivel de hospitales donde radican las especialidades. La única vía para salir de aquí es montada en una grúa que tienen los bomberos y ahí no me monto. No lo resistiré. Prefiero morir aquí.
«Cuando empecé a engordar desmesuradamente pedí a las autoridades competentes que me cambiaran mi apartamento de tres cuartos en Miramar, por uno en un primer piso para asistir con mayor facilidad a las consultas médicas.
«Han pasado años y nunca me han hecho ni una propuesta siquiera para resolver mi problema. Si acudo a ustedes es porque ya no aguanto más».
Caridad enseña entonces las cartas que ha escrito a diversas instancias del país, manifestando lo difícil de su situación, y pidiendo que se le facilite una permuta de su vivienda.
CASO CRÍTICO
Juventud Rebelde visitó a la mayoría de los funcionarios relacionados con el citado caso. «Estamos identificados con el problema de Caridad Águeda Martín. Sabemos y reconocemos que un año es mucho tiempo para solucionarlo, por su estado de salud, pero no contamos ahora con un apartamento de tres cuartos, en bajos, como ella quiere. Eso complica la solución», dice Claudio Crespo Pulido, jefe del Departamento de Atención a la Población de la Vivienda Provincial de la capital.
«Ella tiene razón en ir a todas las instancias. Me pongo en su lugar y sé que no es fácil lo que está pasando. Por lo que respecta a nosotros, cada vez que la Comisión Provincial se reúne el primer tema que tratamos es el de ella. Es un caso de máxima prioridad entre los más de 18 000 que tenemos», manifiesta el funcionario.
JR comprobó que varias casas en Playa cumplen con los requisitos para otórgaselas a Caridad, pero ni Vivienda Municipal ni Provincial tienen facultad para concederlas.
«Según los registros del Departamento de Control del Fondo de este órgano, desde 2004 hasta la fecha existen 29 inmuebles, ubicados en zona congelada, que no han sido objeto de destino alguno, y esta administración no tiene facultad para emitir disposición en este sentido», comunicó textualmente a este diario Bárbara Valmaña Sobrino, directora de la Vivienda Municipal de Playa.
Pero Caridad no exige que la permuta sea precisamente para el mismo municipio donde ahora reside: «Lo que necesito es poder atenderme, y facilitarles a mis hijas poder trasladarme en casos de consultas médicas y emergencias. Claro, si me consiguen una casa en Playa mejor, pero nadie me ha hecho nunca una propuesta oficial para otro municipio», asevera.
Otra incongruencia entre las historias contadas por Caridad y directivos municipales y provinciales de Vivienda, está relacionada con el tiempo que ella lleva tratando de solucionar su dificultad.
«Desde finales del año 2004 se confeccionó el expediente de Caridad para un cambio de vivienda y nunca se ha extraviado de nuestras oficinas», dijo la Directora de la Vivienda en Playa.
Caridad asegura que hace más de 25 años que está tratando de que le cambien su casa, y que en una ocasión sus papeles desaparecieron de las oficinas de Vivienda municipal, lo cual la obligó a acudir a instancias provinciales de Vivienda hace dos años, porque en el nivel municipal le aseguraron que no podían ayudarla.
Aunque la documentación de Águeda Martín fue confeccionada en 2004, es demasiado tiempo para resolver lo que el Jefe del Departamento de Atención a la Población de la Vivienda Provincial considera «un caso crítico».
Los vecinos de Caridad corroboran que ella lleva varios años tratando de que le cambien la casa. Así lo afirma también Bárbara Pelegrino, delegada de la circunscripción.
«Cuando asumí este cargo hace alrededor de dos años, el delegado saliente me entregó el expediente de Caridad como uno de los casos sociales urgentes. Nosotros le tramitamos la inquietud al presidente del Consejo Popular, quien ya sabía también del asunto. Lograr que ella solucione su problema es un gran anhelo de todos nosotros en la zona», añade la delegada.
La presidenta del CDR afirma que Caridad lleva alrededor de 20 años tratando de que le cambien su vivienda. «A menudo la dirección del CDR se reúne para analizar cómo anda ese asunto. Caridad es una cederista preocupada por las actividades que realizamos. Cuando podía, participaba en todas».
SALUD DELICADA
El estado clínico de Caridad Águeda Martín Ortega es delicado. Así lo asegura la doctora Tania Treto Cárdenas, directora del policlínico Ana Betancourt, al cual pertenece Caridad.
«Es una paciente que ha tenido un incremento considerable de peso corporal en los últimos tiempos. Tiene una obesidad desproporcionada, hipertensión arterial, exceso de colesterol en sangre, diabetes, problemas en el vientre por su gran obesidad, incremento del ácido úrico, una hernia umbilical y sinovitis crónica de ambas rodillas, entre otras.
«Está imposibilitada físicamente para bajar y subir escaleras, y por lo tanto lo que recibe son visitas de terreno. Presenta también una gran dificultad porque no contamos con un esfigmo que abarque toda el área de su brazo y no podemos tomarle la presión», argumenta la doctora Tania Treto.
—¿Cómo se resuelve clínicamente este caso?
—Ella debe ingresar en un hospital y ser tratada por un equipo multidisciplinario. Nosotros conocemos su caso hace alrededor de un año y le propusimos ingresarla, pero ella tiene pánico de montarse en la grúa de los bomberos. Yo entiendo su temor, pero es la única vía que tenemos para resolver.
Las duras circunstancias en las que vive Caridad, hacen de su casa una prisión de donde puede escapar solo en sus sueños.
