UJC in Palma Soriano holds its Assembly
This municipality of Santiago de Cuba moves
to make the UJC a true image of its members.

Santiago de Cuba.- With his good-natured manner of speech, Aramis Reyes
from the Barrancas UBPC (Basic Unit of Cooperative production), who has
headed the base committee for 12 years, spoke of what everyone knew but
few did to make the UJC truly resemble its members without ignoring the
higher objectives of its existence.
“It’s not about mouthing the words all the time but to really work on tasks with rigor, integrality and systematic work”, Aramis said. He went on to explain, describing every day activities with his comrades, aside from meetings and tasks, organizing talks on the most varied subjects, filling water tanks for the people when necessary or directing the defense of his region, one of the most distant in the municipality.
He is truly right about talking less and doing more. Because… how else can values be formed, raising the sense of responsibility and forging convictions?
“We can’t continue theorizing nor thinking that if the student reads a book, we gave him the values he should have. For example, values are formed with exigency and combativeness, pressure and the influence of the family, community and promoting activities, definite tasks which strengthen tenacity, will and responsibility which we want to form”.
With these words, the first secretary of the UJC in the province, Roberto Sánchez Figueras, redirected the direction of the organization's evaluation assembly of this Santiago municipality.
But there is still much to do. The delegates agreed with the student leader on strengthening values; while they described situations, it became clear that schematics must be set aside and the subject studied in practice if we want to move forward.
In this one, like in all the assemblies of this kind that I have taken part in lately, the representatives of the structures of the UJC in the educational centers were the only ones who gave concrete examples in their daily lives, of how they investigate, make efforts in the morning period to make them history classes, and for professors to be images of their students or for the parents to raise the level of formation of the Cubans of tomorrow.
In other sectors, on the other hand, as shown in the comments, reflections on the subject seem only set within the “framework” of meetings and theoretical events.
“Not all the young people of the public health system are prepared to assume, with responsibility and humanism, the transformation of the sector…”, delegate Delia Cala pointed out.
“We still have to get to the point where all teachers, one hundred percent, are trained be responsible”, someone mentioned. Other delegates expressed that “some social workers, involved in many activities leave behind their university studies.”
The manner of how to revert this reality from the grass roots committee are reduced to “We have taken them to the regular meetings…” as a young person’s initiative to promote sports meets, walks, visits, climbing historical sites; all told, specific activities which are varied and need to appear in the minutes of these meetings and not in the spirit of the militants.
It’s as if the enthusiasm, verve, and audacity typical of the young had been stripped from the young people, Mock, a founder of the organization told this paper, analyzing figures of young people who reach the age limit do not go on to join the ranks of the Party.
We should not feel satisfied by simply complying with the numerical indexes asked of us, said delegate Wilber Grant, pointedly defining the road for a proper functioning.

SORIANO, Santiago de Cuba.— Con su hablar campechano, sin mucho
rodeo, Aramis Reyes, de la UBPC Barrancas, con 12 años al frente
de su comité de base, dijo lo que todos saben, pero no muchos
hacen, para que el trabajo de la UJC se parezca, de verdad, a
sus miembros, sin desatender los objetivos supremos de su
existencia.«Se trata de no repetir tanto las cosas y ponernos de verdad para hacerlas con rigor, integralidad y trabajo sistemático», dijo Aramis y de inmediato se explicó, al hacer un retrato hablado del día a día de sus compañeros de filas más allá de reuniones y tareas, quienes lo mismo organizan un conversatorio sobre los más diversos temas, que llenan pipas de agua para el pueblo cuando la necesidad obliga, o dirigen la preparación para la defensa en su zona, de las más intrincadas del municipio.
Y tiene mucha razón en eso de hablar menos y hacer más. Porque, ¿de qué otra manera se pueden formar valores, elevar el sentido de responsabilidad y forjar convicciones?
«No podemos seguir teorizando ni pensando que si el estudiante se lee un libro, ya le dimos los valores que debe tener. Los valores se forman con ejemplo, con exigencia y combatividad, presión e influencia sobre la familia, la comunidad y promoviendo actividades, tareas concretas que refuercen esa tenacidad, esa voluntad, esa responsabilidad que queremos formar».
Con estas palabras el primer secretario de la UJC en la provincia, Roberto Sánchez Figueras, devolvió a su cauce la asamblea de balance de la organización en este municipio santiaguero.
Pero aún se está lejos. Y es que, aunque en esencia los delegados coincidieron desde el discurso con el dirigente sobre cómo reforzar los llamados valores, al mismo tiempo las situaciones que describían dejaban claro que urge dejar a un lado la manera tan esquemática como se mira el tema en la práctica, si se quiere avanzar.
En esta, como en todas las asambleas de este tipo en las que he participado últimamente, fueron los representantes de las estructuras de la UJC de los centros educacionales los únicos que aportaron ejemplos concretos acerca de cómo en su cotidianidad investigan, se esfuerzan porque los matutinos sean clases de Historia, los profesores sean un espejo ante sus alumnos, o los padres eleven su papel en la formación de los cubanos del mañana.
En otros sectores, en cambio, tal y como ilustraron las intervenciones, las reflexiones sobre el tema parecen destinadas únicamente a «los marcos» de reuniones y eventos teóricos.
«No todos los jóvenes de la Salud están hoy preparados para asumir, con responsabilidad y humanismo, las transformaciones que vive el sector...», apuntaba la delegada Delia Cala.
«Aún nos falta lograr que el ciento por ciento de los maestros en formación sean responsables», planteaba alguien, y otros delegados exponían que «algunos trabajadores sociales, inmersos en muchas actividades, dejan a un lado sus estudios universitarios».
Las maneras de revertir estas realidades desde el comité de base se reducían a: «Lo hemos llevado a las reuniones ordinarias...», como si la iniciativa juvenil para promover encuentros deportivos, caminatas, visitas, ascensos a lugares históricos, en fin, actividades concretas y diversas, necesitasen aparecer en el orden del día de estas reuniones, y no en el espíritu de los militantes.
Es como si el entusiasmo, los bríos, la audacia, propias de los años mozos, hubieran sido secuestrados de la vida juvenil, decía a este diario el chino Mock, fundador de la organización, al analizar hechos que alcanzan el mismo funcionamiento como aquellas cifras de jóvenes que, después de años en la organización, al arribar a la edad límite no llegan a ingresar a las filas del Partido.
No debemos sentirnos conformes porque cumplimos con los indicadores numéricos que nos piden, decía en la asamblea palmera el delegado Wilber Grant, definiendo certeramente el camino del buen funcionamiento.
