Guantánamo.— «If we can party until the break of dawn, we can also
spend the night standing guard in a sentry box». Such words would
fit anywhere across this
She’s aware of the need to stay alert in that «dangerous geography», just a few meters from the illegal U.S. Navy base. After all, she pointed out, «defending our homeland is not only men’s work».
It was not out of masochism that Yoleixi Andino Rodríguez came up with the statement that fueled the debate going on amid the cream of Caimanera’s UJC members. She’d just made a point that touched a nerve: there’s a certain laid-back attitude about drafting more girls into Women’s Voluntary Military Service.
Yoleixi noticed how her UJC cell comrades’ attention suddenly grew when she described her life as a soldier in the Border Brigade back in 2000. She felt they need to «exchange more, have more information about what goes on there. We women won’t settle for just taking part in Defense Day activities», she assured the audience.
As her convictions raised the delegates’ critical awareness, a number of gaps were brought to light which were pinned on the males. «Some men won’t step forward and hide behind medical certificates instead», student Maricel Viquillón González denounced.
«There are those who resort to fancy footwork to dodge their sacred duty,» she told JR during a break, «while others are excused for minor ailments, without taking into account that Che Guevara endured great hardship in the Sierra Maestra mountains despite his illness, until his efforts were finally crowned with success; he fought in Africa, and gave his life for a Latin American sister country...
«For all his bad health, [Ruben Martinez] Villena organized strikes. And our mambises [1] demonstrated their courage and devotion to this cause over and over again. We must take those who hesitate and immerse them in our history, although I also believe the drafting commission must be harsher when faced with such weaknesses», said the girl.
All these concerns scored a bull’s eye on the performance of our grassroots cells, where defense is high on their regular agenda but nevertheless an issue more often than not wasted in formal, superficial analyses, as UJC National Committee member Arley Santana stressed.
Turning the page on such a sensitive topic is a current concern among the young Caimanera communists. They are fully aware of the need to keep on building and fostering the new generation’s values and revolutionary qualities and improving each UJC member’s exemplary nature.

CAIMANERA, Guantánamo.— «Si amanecemos en fiestas, también podemos hacerlo en una garita, cumpliendo el servicio de guardia». La sentencia acomodaría en cualquier escenario de esta Isla, pero dicha por una joven caimanerense tiene la fuerza de otra carga al machete.
Ella sabe que deben andar alertas en aquella «geografía peligrosa», situada a escasos metros de la ilegal base naval estadounidense. A fin de cuentas, «la defensa de la Patria no es solo cuestión de hombres», remataba.
No fue por masoquismo que Yoleixi Andino Rodríguez atizó el debate de la vanguardia juvenil de Caimanera con aquella reflexión. Era el dedo en la llaga de un señalamiento: Hay cierta parsimonia para alistar a mayor número de muchachas en el Servicio Militar Voluntario Femenino.
La joven ve crecer de súbito el interés de sus colegas del comité de base, cuando les narra sus vivencias como combatiente de la Brigada de la Frontera, en el año 2000. Siente que falta «intercambio, darles más información sobre lo que sucede allí. Las mujeres no nos conformamos con asistir al Día de la Defensa», aseguró al plenario.
Mientras tales convicciones alzaban el espíritu crítico de los delegados, quedaban al descubierto también lagunas atribuibles al sexo masculino. «Algunos varones no dan el paso al frente y se escudan en certificados médicos», denunció la estudiante Maricel Viquillón González.
«Hay quienes apelan a argucias para evadir ese sagrado deber —dijo Viquillón a JR en el receso—, y a algunos se les exonera por padecimientos simples, sin tomar en cuenta que el Che soportó con su enfermedad todos los rigores de la Sierra Maestra hasta ver coronado sus esfuerzos con el triunfo; combatió en África, y entregó su vida por un país hermano de Latinoamérica...
«Villena, enfermo, dirigió huelgas. Y nuestros mambises dieron prueba de mucho valor y entrega a esta causa. A quienes vacilan, debemos sumergirlos en nuestra historia, pero pienso también que las comisiones de reclutamiento deben ser más rigurosas antes tales debilidades», opinó la muchacha.
Tales preocupaciones tocaron fondo en el funcionamiento del comité de base, donde, muchas veces, la defensa ocupa un punto del orden del día de las reuniones ordinarias, pero desperdiciado con análisis formales y sin rigor, como apuntó Arley Santana, integrante del Comité Nacional de la UJC.
Dar una vuelta de página en tal sensible aspecto ocupa, ahora mismo, a los jóvenes comunistas caimanerenses para quienes tampoco pasa inadvertida la necesidad de continuar forjando valores en las nuevas generaciones y potenciar sus cualidades revolucionarias así como de elevar la ejemplaridad de cada militante de la UJC.
