First Female Episcopalian Bishop
in Latin America Ordained in Cuba

Reverend Nerva Cot Aguilera was ordained the first female Episcopalian bishop in Latin America and the Caribbean on Sunday in the Cuban capital.

Ulises Aguero Prendes was also ordained as a bishop at the ceremony held at Havana’s Episcopal Cathedral of Holy Trinity.

Miguel Tamayo, interim bishop of Cuba as well as Uruguay, noted the historical nature of the event for the Anglican Church and especially in Latin America.

Tamayo had asked the Metropolitan Council to designate two auxiliary bishops to help him in his ministry as bishop and leading pastor. Reverend Cot said it was "a privilege" to be named to the post and told Granma that it presented a challenge to promote greater unity in the church and strengthen it in order to accomplish that mission.

Reverend Cot said that to such a high post a women brings her tenderness, sensitivity and experience as mediator due to the role they play in the family: in search of unity, understanding and dialogue. "We are not prone to absolutism; instead, we like to listen," she noted.

The two new Episcopalian bishops took the oath and received their symbolic crosier, crosses and rings before worshipers and bishops and clergy including: Andre Hutchinson and Katherine Jefferts Schori, leaders of the Episcopalian Church of Canada and the United States; and Julio Ernesto Murray, president of the Latin American Council of Churches.

Cot, 69, has worked as a primary school and junior high teacher. She studied languages at the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Camaguey. Arguero, 70, an electrical engineer, worked for 40 years for Cuba’s Electric Company. One will be assigned to the western part of the country and the other to the eastern provinces.

Caridad Diego, who heads of the office of religious affairs at the Communist Party Central Committee, also attended the ordaining ceremony.

Ordenada primera mujer obispo de América Latina

La canóniga cubana Nerva Cot Aguilera fue ordenada ayer como la primera mujer obispo en América Latina y el Caribe, en la capitalina Catedral Episcopal de la Santísima Trinidad. Durante la ceremonia, también el venerable Ulises Agüero Prendes recibió igual distinción del episcopado.

Para Miguel Tamayo, quien funge como obispo interino de Cuba y a la vez de Uruguay, este es un hito en la historia de la iglesia anglicana y, particularmente, en la latinoamericana.

Tamayo había solicitado al Consejo Metropolitano que designara dos obispos sufragáneos para ayudarle en su ministerio de obispo y pastor principal. Nerva Cot se manifestó feliz por su designación, la que llamó "un privilegio", y aseguró a Granma que la encomienda entraña un desafío: unir más a la iglesia y consolidarla para realizar su misión.

La obispo subrayó que a favor de la mujer (para ocupar tan alta responsabilidad) está su ternura, sensibilidad y el rol que desempeñan en la familia como mediadoras: en busca de la unidad, la comprensión y el diálogo. Somos poco dadas al absolutismo; en cambio, nos gusta escuchar, concluyó.

Ante la presencia de miembros de diversas comunidades, obispos y clérigos, entre quienes se hallaban Andrew Hutchison y Katharine J. Schory, primados de la Iglesia Episcopal de Canadá y Estados Unidos, respectivamente, y Julio Ernesto Murray, presidente del Consejo Latinoamericano de Iglesias, ambos prestaron juramento y recibieron símbolos como las prendas, el cayado, cruces pectorales y anillos.

Cot tiene 69 años de edad. Ha laborado como profesora de secundaria básica y de primaria. Cursó la Licenciatura en Lenguas Extranjeras en el Instituto Superior Pedagógico de Camagüey. Mientras, Agüero es ingeniero electricista, trabajó 40 años en la Empresa Eléctrica, y ya tiene 70 años de edad. Uno y otro quedarán a cargo del Occidente y Oriente del país.

En el acto de consagración estuvo presente Caridad Diego, jefa de la Oficina de Atención a Asuntos Religiosos, del Comité Central.
