VARADERO, Matanzas.— On behalf of all Cuban young people, General Raúl Castro, Second Secretary of the Party and Minister of the Armed Forces, was hailed here on his 76th birthday and acclaimed for his dedication to the education of new generations of revolutionaries.

First Secretary of the UJC National Committee Julio Martínez stressed that the best present our youth can give to someone who has devoted his whole life to the revolutionary struggle is to follow his example and always be worthy of his confidence.

It was precisely at the UJC municipal evaluation meeting where the critical and self-critical attitude was best noticed. This was in line with Fidel and Raúl’s continuous encouragement to do so by addressing any problem, no matter how thorny.

«Sometimes we’re afraid to knock on the principal’s door or stand up at a morning briefing and tell the truth», said Ariel Sanabria, from the tourist resort Todo en Uno. The way he sees it, the staff believes they will suffer reprisals if they reveal their fighting spirit and courage. «They show no political bravery for fear of being fired».

The topic brought about a strong disapproval of two-facedness and a call to boost the fight against crime and other evils. These are always lying in wait and must be stemmed in time, as it was made clear that a society like ours must be at the ready to vie with and stamp out such deformations.

Yoatsis Nodarse, from the Club Amigo hotel, talked about how every youth and not only the UJC members must reinforce our daily work with foreign tourists who come on vacation and ask many knotty questions, and brought up issues like that of young people who refuse to join the UJC.

In that regard, Julio Martínez said it’s even worse to accept them on condition, taking into account that it’s conviction and not the size of its membership which sustains the organization.

This leader warned that we must be ready to deal with any questions tourists might ask about our realities, and suggested the grassroots cells have to work on those with greater difficulties and provide them with whatever elements they need to come up with solid arguments.

«I’ve seen young people devoid of good arguments», assured Liudmila Valdés, from Villa Cuba hotel, who insisted we must prepare ourselves to give convincing answers about Cuban reality.

However, this tourist park not only has beach and sunlight. Construction projects are under way, children go to school, and the Revolution’s programs are as active as anywhere else in the country.

The meeting discussed the problem of some 40 local youths who do nothing and have no aspirations whatsoever even if there are jobs available to them in the municipality.

Several speakers also warned about the need to face up to those ghost UJC members who just attend meetings and don't concern themselves with anything else.

Daily Alfonso, from Iberostar Varadero hotel, went even further. He said some of them keep a membership card just to cover their backs, but what the Revolution needs is young people who become members because of their convictions, not their convenience.

In short, the young communists in Cuba’s main tourist park agreed that in every hotel, school, medical facility, construction site, service center, etc., they must not only safeguard economic efficiency, but also consolidate themselves as bastions of socialism and defenders of the Revolution.

VARADERO, Matanzas.— Una felicitación a nombre de toda la Juventud cubana fue transmitida aquí al Segundo Secretario del Partido y Ministro de las FAR, General de Ejército Raúl Castro, por la celebración este domingo de su cumpleaños 76 y por su consagración a la formación de las nuevas generaciones de revolucionarios.

Julio Martínez, primer secretario del Comité Nacional de la UJC, exaltó que el mejor regalo a quien ha dedicado su vida a la lucha revolucionaria es ser consecuente con su ejemplo y nunca defraudar la confianza que ha depositado en los jóvenes.

Precisamente en el balance municipal de la UJC de este territorio se constató ese espíritu crítico y autocrítico al que han llamado siempre Fidel y Raúl a la hora de abordar cualquier problema, por peliagudo que sea.

«A veces tenemos miedo de tocar la puerta del director o pararnos en un matutino y decir la verdad», dijo Ariel Sanabria, del Complejo turístico Todo en Uno. Según su consideración, los trabajadores piensan que si son combativos y valientes pueden tomar represalias contra ellos: «Esa valentía política falta, pues piensan que podrán separarlos de sus puestos de trabajo».

Este tema propició la condena a la doble moral y un llamado a elevar la combatividad ante el delito y otros males que siempre acechan y deben ser frenados a tiempo. Quedó claro que en una sociedad como la nuestra tienen que ser desterradas esas deformaciones con el enfrentamiento oportuno.

Yoatsis Nodarse, del hotel Club Amigo, refirió que falta trabajo diario con los turistas extranjeros, que hacen muchas preguntas espinosas, y que esa labor de conversar con los vacacionistas foráneos no es solo de los militantes, sino de todos los jóvenes.

Ella puso sobre la mesa asuntos como el relacionado con los jóvenes que no quieren integrar las filas de la UJC.

En ese sentido Julio Martínez ahondó que es más dañino aceptarlos con condiciones, teniendo en cuenta que la fortaleza de la organización no se debe a la cantidad de sus militantes sino a las convicciones que sustentan.

El dirigente alertó sobre la preparación para enfrentar las preguntas que hacen los turistas sobre la realidad cubana, y para eso sugirió que el comité de base tiene que identificar a los jóvenes con mayores dificultades y nutrirlos de los elementos que enriquezcan sus explicaciones.

«He visto a jóvenes que no poseen argumentos», valoró Liudmila Valdés, del hotel Villa Cuba, quien además afirmó que hay que prepararse bien para brindar respuestas convincentes sobre la realidad cubana.

Pero el polo turístico no es solo playa y sol. En este balneario se construye, los niños van a las escuelas y varios programas de la Revolución llegan como al más intrincado de los territorios del país.

En el balance se analizó que aun cuando en el municipio existen plazas laborales, hay alrededor de 40 jóvenes desvinculados que no aspiran a nada.

En varias intervenciones hubo también alertas para enfrentar a esos militantes fantasmas que solo asisten a las reuniones y no se preocupan por nada más.

En resumen, los jóvenes comunistas del mayor polo turístico del país coincidieron en que en cada hotel, centro escolar, de la salud, la construcción, los servicios... no solo deben velar por la eficiencia económica, sino afianzarse como baluartes del socialismo y defensores de la Revolución.
