Frida and Diego: Life after death

A homage to Frida and Diego; Voices From the Land, will begin July 6, scheduled to coincide with the centennial of the famed Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, announced the organizers in a news conference at Casa de las Américas.

It will continue until November 24, marking 50 years since the death of her partner, Diego Rivera, considered one of the most important Latin American painters of all time.

The lives and work of these two important artists, myths of Mexican and universal fine art because of their significant creative legacy will be remembered through a series of events sponsored by the Casa Benito Juárez, the Mexican embassy in Cuba, the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Cultural Center and Casa de las Américas.

“Frida is the only example in the history of art where an artist bared her heart to reveal the truth of her feelings. She was an important painter and the best example of the renaissance of art in Mexico,” Diego said once in defense of the work of Frida. Hers was also a genuind autobiography of the stormy existence marked by traditional elements of her land and clearly defined a nationalist political position which placed her among the best artists on the continent. It is impossible to separate her life and work since both are unavoidably bonded paradigms when dealing with subjects such as self-portraiture and identity in fine arts.

The first event in the program is a collective exhibition of photographs, engravings and painting, From the Skin of Eva in the Eyes of Adam, where more than forty artists with different techniques and formats will pay homage to them. Among them are Zaida del Río, Cosme Proenza, Lesbia Vent Dumois, Agustín Bejarano and Nelson Domínguez.

There will be a children’s workshop given by specialist Elba Gutiérrez which will concentrate on revealing the poetry of the famed Mexicans. Students of the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts will paint a mural and both events will be held at the Casa Benito Juárez in Old Havana

The homage will also include a theoretical event entitled Una cinta que envuelve una bomba (A ribbon that envelopes a bomb), an academic seminar which will gather Mexican and Cuban specialists, to be held from September 12 to 14.

Two contests, one of posters and another of songs will complement the program scheduled to end with a collective exhibition of Mexican painters, Viva la vida: Frida. It will be open to the public in September at the Latin American Gallery of Casa de las Américas.

Frida y Diego, vivir después de la muerte

La jornada de homenaje Frida y Diego; voces de la tierra, comenzará el próximo 6 de julio coincidiendo con el centenario de la célebre artista mexicana Frida Kahlo, según anunciaron ayer sus organizadores en conferencia de prensa en Casa de las Américas.

Se extenderá hasta el 24 de noviembre, día que marca los cincuenta años de la desaparición física de su compañero Diego Rivera, considerado uno de los pintores latinoamericanos más significativos de todos los tiempos.

Serán evocadas la vida y obra de estos importantes creadores, mitos de la plástica mexicana y universal por su significativo legado artístico, mediante una serie de actividades auspiciadas por la Casa Benito Juárez, la embajada de México en Cuba, el Centro Cultural Pablo de la Torriente Brau y Casa de las Américas.

"Frida es el único ejemplo en la historia del arte de una artista que abrió su pecho para revelar lo verdadero de sus sentimientos, una pintora superior y la mejor prueba del renacimiento del arte en México", expresó en una ocasión Diego en defensa de las creaciones de Frida, que además de constituir una verdadera autobiografía de su tormentosa existencia, están marcadas por elementos tradicionales de su tierra y definen claramente una posición política nacionalista que la insertaron entre lo mejor del arte del continente. En ella es imposible separar vida y obra, pues ambas funcionan como paradigmas ineludibles cuando se abordan temas como autorretrato e identidad en las artes plásticas.

La primera actividad programada es la exposición colectiva de fotografía, grabado y pintura, Desde la piel de Eva con los ojos de Adán, donde más de cuarenta artistas, entre los que se hallan Zaida del Río, Cosme Proenza, Lesbia Vent Dumois, Agustín Bejarano y Nelson Domínguez, discursarán en disímiles técnicas y formatos sobre los homenajeados.

Habrá un taller infantil de artes plásticas que impartirá la especialista Elba Gutiérrez, que tendrá entre sus objetivos profundizar en la poética de los ilustres mexicanos, y la realización de un mural a cargo de estudiantes de la Academia de Bellas Artes de San Alejandro. Ambas acciones se efectuarán en la Casa Benito Juárez, en la Habana Vieja.

El homenaje también incluirá un evento teórico bajo el título Una cinta que envuelve una bomba, coloquio académico que reunirá a especialistas mexicanos y cubanos del 12 al 14 de septiembre.

Dos concursos, uno de carteles y otro de canciones, complementarán el programa que culminará con la exposición colectiva de pintores mexicanos Viva la vida: Frida que podrá ser vista en el mismo septiembre la Galería Latinoamericana de Casa de las Américas.
