Pinar del Río.— In the native land of mambí[1]
captain Adela Azcuy, who saw combat 49 times, the first Young
Communist League (UJC) municipal assembly heard several young womens'
views on joining Military Service on a volunteer basis.
Both
the above patriot’s rebellious spirit and Martí’s words when he said
that «the pedestal of our freedom may be in the Andes, but its heart
is in our women» were present in statements about the need to get
ready to defend ourselves as the best way to guarantee peace.
Anayansi Páez Reyes, president of the pioneer students’ organization in Viñales, told about her impressions when she met with members of the all-woman platoons Las Marianas and Las Celias and shared her own expectations about her soon-to-come departure to do Military Service as of June 15.
She is by no means the first young leader in this province to set an example by fulfilling such an essential duty. As agreed in the Assembly they will all take steps through the local FEEM [High School Students Federation] to make their experiences known later on in pre-university schools.
UJC National Bureau member Hilder Torres remarked that the issue was covered by the Fifth Plenary Meeting of the UJC National Committee attended by Army General Raúl Castro, Second Secretary of the Party and Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces. It was made clear that the presence of women in the ranks will be the result of the work done by the UJC and their conscious willingness, accustomed though they are to take care of other jobs.
Torres Escalona underscored the discipline and preparedness shown by the 25 UJC leaders who have joined the Women’s Voluntary Military Service and proved their skills to fulfill the missions assigned to them.
«Defending our Homeland is the most important of the Revolution’s programs», some participants acknowledged, saying the issue must be jointly approached by the Pioneer Students and organizations such as FEEM, FEU (Federation of University Students) and the UJC.
The continuity of the Revolution’s achievements as well as the efforts to strengthen patriotic values also depend on how Cuban history is taught in order to distinguish yesterday’s Cuba from today’s.
Jesús Reyes, a leader of the UJC cell at the Fructuoso Rodríguez Credit and Services Cooperative, from Puerto Esperanza, stressed that some of their members have joined one of the Watching the Sea brigades, where they have faced a number of illegal acts in their area.
As a young person’s foremost duty, defending the country is not only about reporting for duty once a month, they said, but a daily attitude that begins in the workplace and continues in the community.
Yosvany Álvarez Sisto, who was confirmed as the UJC First Secretary in Viñales, pointed out that it’s not enough for the UJC cell to know the names in the register kept by a military committee: it must be aware of those young people’s performance in whatever missions they receive from the committee.
Profound analyses were also made of the links between this topic and a person’s values, unconditionality and patriotism, and the participants recalled that it was in Viñales where the rural militia known as Los Malagones wrote a beautiful page of our history.

Pinar del Río.— En el terruño de la capitana mambisa Adela Azcuy
Labrador, quien participó en 49 combates, varias muchachas
abordaron en la primera asamblea municipal de la UJC en
Vueltabajo, la incorporación voluntaria de las mujeres al
Servicio Militar.Y la rebeldía de la patriota, unida a aquel pensamiento martiano «en los Andes puede estar el pedestal de nuestra libertad, pero el corazón de nuestra libertad está en nuestras mujeres», estuvieron en las intervenciones que abordaron la necesidad de prepararse para la defensa como mejor modo de garantizar la paz.
Anayansi Páez Reyes, presidenta de los pioneros en Viñales, relató sus impresiones al conocer a las integrantes de los pelotones femeninos Las Marianas y Las Celias y contó cuántas expectativas tenía ante su próxima partida para el Servicio Militar, el próximo 15 de junio.
Ella no es ni mucho menos la primera dirigente juvenil de la provincia que dará el ejemplo en este esencial deber; todas narrarán después sus vivencias a las alumnas de preuniversitario, en coordinación con la FEEM en el territorio, y este fue uno de los acuerdos tomados en la asamblea.
Hilder Torres Escalona, miembro del Buró Nacional de la UJC, señaló que este tema fue abordado en el V Pleno del Comité Nacional de la organización, que contó con la presencia del General de Ejército Raúl Castro, Segundo Secretario del Partido y Ministro de las FAR en el cual se precisó que la incorporación de la mujer será el fruto del trabajo de la UJC y de la disposición consciente de ellas, tal y como están acostumbradas a hacer en otras tareas.
Torres Escalona subrayó la disciplina y la preparación demostradas por las 25 cuadros de la UJC que se han incorporado al Servicio Militar Voluntario Femenino, las cuales demostraron sus habilidades en el cumplimiento de las misiones.
«El programa de la Revolución que más hay que atender es la defensa de la Patria», reconocieron varios de los participantes en la asamblea, quienes señalaron que hay que abordarlo de manera integral, con la organización de Pioneros, la FEEM, la FEU y la UJC.
La continuidad de la obra de la Revolución y el fortalecimiento de los valores patrióticos también dependen de la enseñanza de la historia de la nación, de lo que fue Cuba ayer y de lo que es hoy.
Jesús Reyes, del comité de base de la UJC de la CCS Fructuoso Rodríguez, de Puerto Esperanza, resaltó que varios jóvenes de ese colectivo forman parte de un destacamento Mirando al mar, el cual ha hecho frente a actividades ilícitas en la zona.
La defensa, como el más importante deber de un joven, no significa única y exclusivamente asistir a una cita al mes, expresaron, sino es la actitud cotidiana que comienza en el centro de trabajo y continúa en la comunidad.
Yosvany Álvarez Sisto, ratificado como primer secretario de la UJC en Viñales, puntualizó que no se trata solo de que el comité de base conozca que el joven está inscrito en un área de atención, sino de conocer cómo es su desempeño ante las misiones que se le asignan allí.
Los vínculos de este tema con los valores, incondicionalidad y patriotismo, también fueron abordados con profundidad por los participantes, quienes recordaron que en Viñales se formó aquella milicia campesina conocida como Los Malagones, quienes escribieron una hermosa página de la historia nacional.
