BEIRUT, Lebanon. — To this little nation, the political crisis which the findings of the Winograd report caused within Israel’s Cabinet is conclusive proof of the Lebanese’s overwhelming victory over the fourth most powerful army of the world in the so-called 33-Day War last summer.
In an exclusive interview made by special correspondents from Cuba’s Mesa Redonda and TV Information Services, soon to be broadcast on the island, Lebanese president Emile Lahoud recalled his words to the Summit of the Non-Aligned Countries when he spoke of Lebanon’s victory over Israel and some questioned whether the invader’s withdrawal could be tagged as a defeat, which now they officially recognize themselves.
In Lahoud’s opinion, "that defeat signaled the breakup of the American-Israeli plans for the region" and had an adverse effect on both the invaders and their allies, especially the United States, what with all the new weaponry that it tried out for the first time against our people, whose heroic resistance ultimately silenced them.
About the likelihood of further vindictive aggressions spurred by the loser’s arrogance, Lahoud is convinced that in the near future Israel will not embark on another large-scale military operation against Lebanon or other countries like Syria and Iran precisely because of the crises facing Olmert and Bush on account of their respective military failures in Lebanon and Iraq.
If it weren’t for those two defeats, Israel would have already fallen on the threatened nations, says Lahoud, without ruling out the possibility that Israel will insist on launching limited military actions and selective bombings.
"Anything can be expected from Israel", assured the leader, repeating what he had already said in the United Nations about the Zionist defeat – "the second after that of the year 2000" – as evidence that the use of violence against neighboring countries bears no fruit and that talking remains the only way to find a rational solution to any kind of conflict.

En una entrevista exclusiva con los enviados especiales de la Mesa Redonda y los Servicios Informativos de la TV Cubana, que se transmitirá próximamente en los espacios televisivos de la Isla, Emile Lahoud, presidente del Líbano, recordó que cuando en la Cumbre de los No Alineados de La Habana, habló de la victoria libanesa sobre Israel, algunos cuestionaron que definiera como derrota la retirada de los invasores. Y ahora son ellos mismos quienes lo están reconociendo oficialmente.
En opinión del mandatario, «esa derrota marcó la ruptura del plan norteamericano-israelí para la región» y afecta tanto a los invasores como a sus aliados, especialmente a Estados Unidos, que entregó muchas armas estrenadas en el conflicto contra el pueblo que finalmente las silenció con su heroica resistencia.
Sobre la posibilidad de que la soberbia de los derrotados derive en nuevas agresiones revanchistas, Lahoud está convencido de que en el futuro inmediato, Israel no se lanzará en otra operación militar de gran envergadura sobre el Líbano u otro países, como Siria e Irán, precisamente por las crisis que enfrentan tanto Olmert como Bush debido a los fracasos respectivos de sus ejércitos en el Líbano y en Iraq.
Sin esas dos derrotas, la ofensiva israelí hubiera caído ya sobre las naciones amenazadas, afirma Lahoud, quien, sin embargo, no descarta que Israel insista en las operaciones militares limitadas y los bombardeos selectivos.
«De Israel se puede esperar todo», afirmó el dirigente, pero reiteró lo que ya dijo ante Naciones Unidas sobre la derrota sionista –«la segunda después de la del año 2000»- como prueba que el método de la violencia contra estados vecinos no dará ningún fruto y que la única vía para solucionar de forma racional cualquier tipo de conflicto, sigue siendo la negociación.
