«Without a condom, don't even think about it!» is the battle cry adopted by many women who have joined the Salud=Belleza Afrodita Project currently underway at the El Pilar-Atarés community in Cerro municipality.
Unique within and outside
Salud=Belleza Afrodita opened its doors on February 14 as a center for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS where hairstyling services are also available, so women can at one time make themselves beautiful and learn how to stay healthy.
«They have welcomed this facility with open arms. It's still unfinished after three years of work, but the community was so eager that we had to open, and when better than on St. Valentine's, a fitting day to talk about sex and the diseases it leaves in its wake», said Leticia Santa Cruz Pérez, a health promoter and coordinator of the original idea.
TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE

With a clientele ranging from little girls to senior citizens, they give a condom to everyone who enters, together with a brochure about the UNIFEM project that they hand out as they wait for the center's own promotional material to be ready.
For the time being, TV spots and lively conversation about STDs and AIDS help the customers make their waiting more pleasant. Planned for the near future are live music performances, exhibitions, fashion shows stressing the human body's beauty and film discussions, among other surprises.
Trained as health promoters like the whole staff, the hairdressers have great communication links with the patrons, ask them general questions about STDs and HIV/AIDS, and meet as a working group later on to discuss the answers they get.
Dailé Ramos O�Farril used to work in another beauty parlor, but was soon lured by the humanism that this project entailed. «Despite our short time in operation, I notice that I've improved my skills as a health promoter and thus been able to instruct people. It's great to see how we gradually reach our goals, especially with youth», she stated.
Young girls like Danay Valdés, 14, come to Afrodita both to have their hair done and get information about these issues. «I think this helps prevent disease. Here I've learned new things, such as the different ways to protect myself from contagion. I'll keep coming, and I'll tell my friends so they can learn too», she assured.
ALWAYS WITH A CONDOM
Women who were usually oblivious to the danger and are now closely involved with Salud=Belleza Afrodita have managed to get the message of prevention across to and throughout El Pilar-Atarés community. Many have become sensitive to the AIDS danger and carry condoms in their purse, and even urge their husbands to do likewise, by no means a carte blanche to infidelity.
Let's take Vilma Odelaisi Ramos, 37, as an example. Whenever she and her husband have a chance, they contribute to the campaign. «Some people know very little about how to prevent this pandemic, so we bring them here for instruction», she stresses.
She was pleasantly surprised when she felt the lovely sensation that prevailed in Afrodita, which she calls the best beauty parlor she has ever seen, one where they help you look and live better.
«In my view, a woman's wish to look nice and pretty can go hand in hand with an education on how to prevent a disease that she can avoid with just some interest, good will and a handy condom.
«We must work on it since the time when our children start having sex», warns Caridad Tocabens Martínez, a social worker at the Integrated Transformation Workshop of El Pilar-Atarés and a regular at Afrodita.

«We'd like to go on advising women and then add other programs on self-esteem, family violence, and so on», said Leticia. Salud=Belleza Afrodita, her brainchild, means everything to her, a dream come true that has become her whole life. «Never mind how much I do for it, I always think I fall short of our target and then work more», she added.
Her advice about STDs and HIV/AIDS is not to trust: for all the efforts devoted to prevention, many people are yet to gain awareness and understand they need to protect themselves. «The more confident we are, the higher the risk we face... You must never believe it won't happen to you».

Integran promoción de salud en un centro de belleza

«Sin condón ni pensarlo», es el lema de muchas mujeres que se han sumado al Proyecto Salud=Belleza Afrodita de la comunidad El Pilar-Atarés, en el municipio capitalino del Cerro.
El aumento del índice de infestados de VIH/sida y la necesidad que tenían las mujeres de dicha comunidad de un espacio para embellecerse, llevaron a la fundación de este proyecto, por ahora único de su tipo en Cuba y en el mundo.
Inaugurado el 14 de febrero, Salud=Belleza Afrodita es un centro de prevención de Infecciones de Transmisión Sexual y VIH/sida, donde se oferta el servicio de peluqueríaSalud=Belleza Afrodita es un centro de prevención de Infecciones de Transmisión Sexual y VIH/sida, donde se oferta el servicio de peluquería, lo que permite a las féminas embellecerse y preocuparse por estar saludables al mismo tiempo.
«La población lo ha recibido maravillosamente bien. Se ha estado diseñando desde hace 3 años; aún estamos a media máquina, pero era tanta la expectativa de la comunidad que tuvimos que abrir. Escogimos el Día del Amor porque es muy propicio para hablar de sexo y de las enfermedades relacionadas con él», aclaró Leticia Santa Cruz Pérez, promotora de salud y coordinadora de esta novedosa idea.
DOS PÁJAROS DE UN TIRO

Por el momento, mientras las clientas esperan su turno para arreglarse, pueden ver spots televisivos y formar parte de charlas amenas sobre las Infecciones de Transmisión Sexual y el Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Adquirida, sida. En un futuro no muy lejano podrán disfrutar de actividades culturales con grupos musicales, exposiciones, desfiles de modas que expresen la belleza del cuerpo humano y cine-debates, entre otras sorpresas.
Las peluqueras, al igual que todo el personal del salón, fueron preparadas como promotoras de salud. Establecen una amplia comunicación con las usuarias, les hacen preguntas generales y sobre las ITS y el VIH/sida, y al final del día debaten la información recibida en un equipo de trabajo.
Dailé Ramos O’Farril era peluquera en otro centro, pero el humanismo de este proyecto la atrapó desde el primer momento. «A pesar de que recién comenzamos percibo que he aumentado mis conocimientos como promotora de salud y eso me ha servido para instruir a la población. Me siento bien al ver que se va logrando nuestro objetivo, sobre todo con la juventud», expresó.
Jóvenes como Danay Valdés, de 14 años, visitan el salón Afrodita no solo para arreglarse el pelo, sino también con el propósito de recibir información sobre esta temática. «Creo que esto puede ayudar en la prevención de esas enfermedades. Aquí he aprendido cosas nuevas, como las distintas formas de protección para evitar el contagio. Volveré a este lugar y se lo recomendaré a mis amiguitas para que se instruyan», dijo.
SIEMPRE CON CONDÓN
Mujeres que antes no prestaban atención a este tema han pasado a formar parte de Salud=Belleza Afrodita, y a través de ellas se ha logrado divulgar el tema de la prevención en la comunidad Pilar-Atarés.
Muchas se han sensibilizado con el peligro del SIDA y llevan condones en sus carteras, e incluso exigen a sus esposos que los lleven también, aunque eso no signifique que los autoricen a ser infieles.
Ejemplo de ello es Vilma Odelaisi Ramos, de 37 años de edad. Ella y su pareja, cuando tienen la posibi-
lidad, contribuyen con la campaña. «Hay personas que tienen poca cultura en cuanto a la prevención de esta pandemia, pero podemos traerlas aquí para que se vayan instruyendo», alegó.
Por eso quedó gratamente sorprendida por el ambiente amoroso que se respira en el salón Afrodita. Dice que es la mejor peluquería que ha visitado, porque además de los servicios que prestan, te preparan para la vida.
«Yo pienso que pueden ir parejas la motivación de las mujeres por arreglarse y lucir bonitas con la prevención de esas enfermedades, posibles de evitar si se tiene un poco de interés, buena voluntad y si se usa el condón.
«Creo que debemos trabajar en esto desde el momento en que los muchachos comienzan a tener sus primeras relaciones sexuales», expresó Caridad Tocabens Martínez, quien frecuenta el lugar y es trabajadora social del Taller de Transformación Integral Atarés-El Pilar.
EN LA CONFIANZA ESTÁ EL PELIGRO
Este proyecto auspiciado por el Centro Nacional de Prevención de las ITS VIH/sida, ONUSIDA, UNESCO, PNUD y Fondo Global, se creó inicialmente para féminas; pero se piensa extender a los hombres, porque ya existe la necesidad de integrarlos al mismo.
«Queremos comenzar orientando a la mujer, y además del tema de sexo vamos a crear programas sobre autoestima, violencia familiar, entre otros», explicó Leticia.
La idea inicial de Salud=Belleza Afrodita fue suya, desde entonces ha significado todo para ella. Es un sueño que pudo hacer realidad y ahora es su vida. «Pienso que mientras más le doy, menos le estoy dando, y cada día me esfuerzo un poco más», dijo.
Su consejo sobre las ITS y el VIH/sida es no confiar, porque a pesar de que se está haciendo un trabajo muy fuerte de prevención, no todas las personas se han sensibilizado con esto y no comprenden que es necesario protegerse.
«Cuando más confiados estemos, es cuando más peligro corremos... Nunca podemos decir que no nos va a tocar», agregó.
