Year's end comments

Esteemed Deputy Minister Eumelio Caballero,
Esteemed comrades and colleagues:

There’s something about December that invites taking inventory. The year is about to end, and one tends to go over goals as yet fulfilled and find consolation in the thought that our accomplishments during the last 12 months outnumbered whatever tasks, such as re-accreditation, which we had to put on ice until after the fireworks display when the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s Eve.

In 2006 our country saw several historical events that attracted your glances and those of many colleagues from other countries. I’ll just mention a few of them.

For instance, almost a thousand foreign journalists came to cover the Summit of the Non-Aligned Countries together with you and around 400 Cuban media professionals. Those days of hard work were preceded by months of intense preparation and organization, though the media coverage of the Summit’s political achievements paid dearly for the additional white hairs we’ll have to count by the end of 2006.

It was the year of our Commander-in-Chief’s proclamation. The announcement of his illness came as a terrible blow just a few hours after we had shared with him the events in Bayamo and Holguín. Since then, and from both sides of the table, we have kept abreast of his recovery. The first days of August were hectic, especially for those of you who had to work for many hours on end and often under the pressure of editors whose vulture-like behavior hardly resembles the attitude expected from media professionals.

With your help the world knew that the Cubans are concerned, like children about their sick father, but stay together and calm, in their jobs as well as in their battle stations, waiting for their captain’s return. No one had to come to Cuba to make the story known.

Those who heralded chaos and swallowed their own tales were left hanging in the air, with no floor, carpet, ladder or paintbrush to hold on to. I take the opportunity to thank you for your articles, in all cases written with the proper sense of ethics and sensitivity for such a delicate occasion. And I appreciate your every heartfelt wish, which I know you harbor, for a happy end to our chief's recovery.

It was also this year when our hopes to bring our five heroes back and put an end to that injustice slipped through our fingers because of political pressure, insensitivity and insufficient media coverage.

Silence is an accomplice of those willing to sacrifice those 5 young men. Not revealing that a whole people cry out for justice and have embraced so noble a cause only contributes to give the key to their cells an additional turn.

I’m grateful to those who strived throughout the year to break that silence, their motivation sparked perhaps by the petition we filed around this date last year. However, I must say in all fairness that it was not enough. I can only tell you now that in 2007 we will all insist and persist with your help until our endeavor is finally crowned with works that describe the Cuban people’s saga and make the injustice done against our five heroes known all over the world.

Many of you know that we are equally unhappy about the lack of access to some official sources. There are still many obstacles ahead and a lot of work to be done in this respect. We think our results so far are poor, despite our great efforts. Up to last October we had counted 84 press conferences, 14 events and 28 high-level visits, in addition to a total 402 activities that CPI (International Press Center) successfully covered. We’ll keep toiling, confident that you will do your best to report in a strictly objective way every access we gain and every word we manage to get out of a leader.

We have also kept trying to organize our work more every day. Now this Center is more institutionalized, and the same can be said about your professional relations, best expressed perhaps by Resolution 182, the product of three years of work and revision of the old code of 1997 to make the rules of the game more transparent.

Censorship has never been our objective, which is set instead on objectiveness, ethics and truthfulness. When we call you now and then to ask you why media organs for which you are not accredited have published your work, it’s because we want to know whether there’s another window of opportunity for our realities to spread rather than an intention to punish a violation.

Colleagues and comrades, allow me to speak now in the first person. It’s almost 2007, my seventh year in charge of this Center, or simply said, walking on a knife-edge laid out over a chasm and carrying 10 kg of gunpowder in my arms, with a fuse that never goes out.

I’ll keep working in your midst and with you with the same affection, trying to open communication avenues to understand each other. There has been the odd time when we’ve had a mix-up or two, albeit in a respectful atmosphere. I appreciate your understanding and usual patience. And I’m sure you’re aware that the bonds of affection that most of you and I have created in time can never, ever tamper with my duty as a humble guardian of my homeland’s image. This has been a tradition among the CPI workers that I take pride of following. Our principles will forever remain vertical.

That’s enough reminiscing for today. I wish you a happy 48th anniversary of the Revolution or, in other words, a happy 2007, the year when we will celebrate our Commander in Chief’s 81st birthday.

Thank you very much

Estimado viceministro Eumelio Caballero,
Estimados compañeros,
Estimados colegas:

Solo voy a rememorar unos pocos.

Muchas gracias.
