EPILOGUE
Thinking with your own head
Under any circumstances, it is advisable to think things out on your own. But,
sometimes it is more necessary than others. The character of this need depends
on what is at play. Latin American thought, as a whole, has gone through
different stages which are not always clear or, at least, its promoters insist
on an explicit question. To those scholars of the 16th and 17th centuries it did
not seem necessary to mark the differences between philosophy and European
theology because it did not differ from their own. However, from the very
beginning of the evolution of Latin American thought, there was a certain
intention of marking some specificities or, at least, its perspectives or
circumstances, as expressed in La Lógica mexicana, by Antonio
Rubio. But it was still necessary to wait for a greater conformation of American
identity to influence our scholars to understand the need to think
independently.
To think with your own head does not man assuming positions of epistemic chauvinism and shutting out all availability of thought from any part of the world for those with whom they could share, in part or totally, their way of thinking. Quite the contrary, it means assuming them, but not blindly but in correspondence to cognitive aphoristic and ideological demands, required by each moment. The degree of authenticity must be gauged rather than being original. This exercise presupposes assuming ideas as being ones own, more adequate, without concern over their origin. It does not matter whether or not it is linked to prior study or if it is an absolutely individual product. Consequently, the midwife loses no merit in terms of originality in the intellectual birth of each idea.
The Latin American forefathers did not doubt to assume intellectual production and experiences of the revolutionary processes of Europe and the United States as well as the cultural world available during their time, on which to ideologically base their emancipatory processes. Both Bolívar and Martí, in spite of their differences in time and circumstance, were well aware that if an open assumption of political and philosophical, etc. ideas were not bound to the forces of that world of racial difference. The former conceived the idea of an America contributing to the liberation of our fertilized America by “our nature”, as Martí called for, it would be difficult to achieve the desires for sovereignty demanded by the peoples.
Political, economic and cultural borders between what is ours, the Latin, and what is not ours, the Saxon, that made a difference by the mid-18th century to the early 19th. Then it became very clear what the intentions of the imperial United States governments were regarding our nations to the south. That is when the circumstances demanded more of our intellectuals that they concentrate, to a greater degree, on thinking with their own heads. Andrés Bello understood at the very beginning, that our democracy could not be the same as the one in the US. Alberdi called for an American philosophy because it was impossible to ignore the ethic and political component insistently calling for a greater production of Latin American thought which now seems more urgent that ever.
At the same time, the political commitment of our scholars is more manifest in correspondence with the understanding that the destiny of the dazzling republic to the North would be opposed to those of the South. Montalvo did not doubt representing the First International in his Ecuador. Varona, also, would not do so by assuming Patria, organ of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and, in spite of his modest spirit, he was captured by Martí’s anti-imperialism. Vasconcelos – who learned, from infancy, the misfortune of living in a country so far from God and so near to the United States – developed a rich nationalism which must have its roots in Indo-America. Rodo, meanwhile, in spite of his geographic distance, centered the aim of his intellectual canons against northomania. There has been no important thinker in Our America who did not lend his pen to the service of the noble causes of the people who has not understood the impossibility of satisfying demands of these nations and those of the United States government. Facing this dilemma, as in all dilemmas, Latin American intellectuality has been divided. It has differed between a Latin American intellectuality which does not want to endanger the multiple visas to the country of marvels and those others, aware of their ideological and cultural commitment, whose attitude is very far from being a summer T-shirt.
The century that bade farewell to an era of definitions has put into play, once more, even the survival of humanity. The future is not arriving with a bouquet of flowers. The ghost of ideological domination is determined, however, in preventing us to thinking with our own head. The challenge now is greater because the means of communication are more efficient as are the manipulation of consciousness. Therefore it will be an era of new challenges for those of us who realize that we do not live in the best of possible worlds and that Latin America will have to pay double dues of sacrifice if it does not assume, in time, not only the attitude of thinking with its own head but what is more important, of acting.
One small people of this Latin American region took up the challenging glove of thinking and acting with its own head. The most defeatist predictions considered it impossible to achieve its objectives due to the nearness to the country that believes it is destined to think for everyone else. Some still doubt it. They are the eternal doubters that authentic revolutions could be victorious. Revolutions are the best exercise for thinking and acting on one’s own. This people continues to challenge and demonstrate that it is possible to think and act in such a manner. The experience of the Cuban Revolution demonstrated that as it approached the Soviet scheme of interpretation of reality, the farther it drifted from its creative possibilities and proposals according to their particularities of development. It was at this time that its enemies were happiest to prevent it from thinking with its own head and it was when its friends critically stepped back although the majority would not betray her.
Latin American political and intellectual sectors consider that it is possible to fight for the right to think with one’s own head. They are inspired by the great historical personalities of the past and present to base such a possibility but, logically, we must confront many obstacles. Some get tired in the effort. The fatalists believe that it is useless to take up such an unequal battle against the mass media. Others, stronger still, and for this reason essential, not only cultivate these ideas against the current but bare their chest to the bullets and its principles to the apocalyptic death chants.
Now to assume the condition of intellectual, at least in Latin America, is not such a great dream; not many want it in this pragmatic and mechanical society. Since the early 20th century Einstein said he revindicated idealism against the stink of the shit in this world.
The axiomatic disaster of today’s world has given way to the patterns of the westerns that no longer are a virtual reality and acquire a character of public opinion imposed and generalized. Today’s cowboys now dress like marines and they are the good guys. Now they don’t kill Indians but Vietcongs, Sandinists, inhabitants of Granada, narcodictators, guerrillas, etc. In the midst of this chaos some intellectuals chose to abandon and regret their youthful dreams considering them the fruits of immaturity. They prefer to place themselves at the service of market dictatorship. Those who confront this omnipresent power are seen as outdated hippies in an obsessively postmodern era where the attitudes of the sixties are merely modern. Postmodernism now forbids phrases like “forbidden to forbid”; it is stimulating weak thought; it is declaring death to the long histories, among which revolutions are found. The modern was rebellious, non-conformist, informal, idealists and, consequently, out of date. The new paradigm today is the circumspect, modern, conservative man who accepts the truths found in their pcs or that they receive on Internet only if it complies with the requirements of all submissiveness to the law of supply and demand.
In the midst of such difficult conditions the intellectual who wants to keep on being one and wants to increasingly improve, who is not ashamed of his idealistic hues, gets together, writes, speaks out, criticizes in any means possible and cultivates the most honorable humanism. While those who hide the hues – that does not necessarily main they lack them – take distance from the humanist and encouraging project that has sparked the best of Latin American thought from the very first manifestations of our time.
We are not intent on undeserved messianisms, and much less animate the Heidegger concept that philosophers should be pastors of the Being. What is true is that every professional of Philosophy – who know if they are genuine philosophers or not – fulfill their teaching mission of stimulating new generations – as also the not so new – the recovery of confidence in human capacity to improve and step out of that lost course of the mirage of “real socialism” that disappeared and show the arid desert of “real capitalism” where man is always alone.
This teaching mission cannot be circumscribed to an academic environment. One of the main challenges that philosophy has in Our America has so much before it if it can overcome the obstacles of domination of the mass media by those who consider that they live in the best of possible worlds. It is not merely a denunciation of a lack of possibilities, of cloaked censorship etc. and the scarce available means of expression of those who think with their own head. The task is to achieve space, of course, but not to wait passively for them to be “democratically” granted. We must know how to conquer them by whatever means.
This task has to be done, in the first place, from within the world of the university and cultural institutions. But we must be aware that we are not living in times where the universities were characterized by their spirit of rebellion. The wave of conservative thinking has been disrupting the universities, physically breaking them up in the cities to leave in its place a central role of socio-political thermometer. The fact that it is becoming more difficult to find spaces of critical reflection in the study plans and university subjects that are now imported in cans from the very scientific, technological and ideological centers of power aimed at cloning everything, in the style of the United States. This should not discourage those who are duty bound to build new theoretical laboratories of experimentation of thought done with one’s own mind. But limiting this task to the university would be slashing the dimensions of Latin American thought. If this wishes to maintain popular roots – that has nothing to do necessarily with populist discourse – it should extend beyond to other spheres of civilian society.
There is always the risk these institutions be identified with party campaigns and other interests, but it is never possible to reach a land of concrete utopias for the majority without crossing the turbulent oceans of that abstract utopia that is neoliberal triumphalism sprayed with some form of ideological waters. Only intellectual level and academic rigor can be an effective antidote against common venomous insinuations of the right wing over the lack of professionalism of the left. To achieve this rigor, the latter must delve into the right wing intellectual discourse to discover its fissures. These disqualifying attitudes of bourgeois thought promoted by the Marxism-Leninism of the USSR already demonstrated its disastrous consequences for a genuine scientific, social and philosophical product for their own intelligentsia as for their government that could have well learned where its strength and weakness resides.
If we intend to combat the conceptual apparatus of the dominant discourse of today it must be learned very well, study it to find its rational cores and its weak points. The same manner in which the most intelligent Marxologists placed their services to the discredited mission of socialism. Today the intellectuality of the left has the duty to study the theoretic bases of neoliberalism, the postmodernist philosophies and the different courses to discover what can be assumed of contemporary culture and what is conceived to serve the social order that does not seem able to easily erase humanity, like many of us expected. To continue revealing the inhuman essence of real capitalism and raise the humanist sense of genuine ideas of socialism – although not all practical attempts have contributed to its true reach – is one of the main challenges of those who intend to think for themselves in our America like Bolívar, Martí or Che did in their respective circumstances but always trying to transcend them and give rise to higher circumstances.
Only in this manner can we contribute to theoretically enrich those who intend to think from different points of the periphery of the current centers of power, peripheries that sometimes crosses the borders of those very same centers. Current centers today build walls to isolate immigrants and emancipating ideologies. The mission of committed intellectuality with these peripheries is to develop everything, the main feature of all epistemic exercise: think with one’s own head.

EPÍLOGO
Pensar con cabeza propia
En cualquier circunstancia es recomendable pensar con
cabeza propia.
procedencia.
vietcongs, sandinistas, granadinos, narcodictadores, guerrilleros, etc.
propia.
