pleasing birthday greetings which have come in

CubaNews birthday 2007

It's amazing how fast the time flies when you're having fun and doing what you want, and it's something which needs so urgently to be done.

CubaNews is now seven years old. Today is the list's birthday, an event worth taking a few moments to reflect on as it begins its eighth year of service. It's hard to believe how much this list has accomplished during the past seven years, and how urgent and necessary it continues to be.

Take a moment and look at the first messages ever posted to CubaNews:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CubaNews/messages/1?l=1

CubaNews began as an informal network of a few dozen people who had worked together in the struggle to return Elian Gonzalez to the custody of his father and family who live in Cuba. Today we're seeing a similar situation unfolding in the Florida courts where a four-year-old child, whose mother brought her to the United States three years ago, and who lost custody of her children to the children's services agencies after she attempted to commit suicide. Had the child been from any other country on earth, she'd have long-since been returned there. But since she's from Cuba, rightist exile militants are trying to legally kidnap her and keep her in the U.S., more or less as a trophy in their endless war against the Cuban Revolution.

The purpose of the CubaNews list is to provide its readers with a wide selection of news, information and analysis with what I like to call a Cuba-centric perspective. This means that the principal criteria for information posted to CubaNews is that it's either from, about or related to Cuba, toward the Cuban people's international diaspora and so on. This list isn't limited to just information about life on the island, and it isn't limited to merely the political aspects of Cuba's life and international relations.

The guiding principles are posted to the list's home page and are worth reviewing from time to time: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CubaNews/

The basic criterion is that CubaNews is committed to support for the idea that Cuba has a right to determine its own destiny, free from the outside intervention of any foreign powers.

From the beginning, I've been the principal poster and that's still the case. Anyone else who would like to participate is welcome to join in the work which is limitless because there's so much going on. I certainly cannot keep up with it all, though I work hard at this, about eight days a week.

CubaNews is a research project, a news service, and a place to find comment and criticism of the ways Cuba is reported in the dominant corporate media.

At the same time there's also room for discussion and dialogue over the meaning of the Cuban Revolution, and of the various issues flowing from it. The list's website has a database with over 70 thousand items which can be easily searched and you don't have to subscribe to access the database.

Long-time readers of these messages know that my interest in Cuba precedes my birth. My father and his parents lived in Cuba from 1939 to 1942. They were German Jewish refugees from Hitler's holocaust. That's where my own interest in Cuba comes from. Cuban society today represents an effort to build an alternative to the way life was under the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. Some things work, some don't. It has its flaws and contradictions, as well as significant achievements. No society is perfect. But we can learn many things from Cuba's experience. And we can and should do everything we can to help Cuba to solve its own problems, in its own way, without any more foreign intervention being imposed on the island than there already is.

Cuba provides us all with a model of how much can be accomplished under the harshest of conditions. Yet Cuba is not a model of what a socialist society should look like in the abstract and in general. This is because such models can only be made up out of peoples' imaginations, however well-intentioned they might be.

Thanks very much to the many readers for staying with CubaNews, in growing numbers. This list started with a few dozen subscribers during the Elian struggle. Now we've got over a thousand subscribers on every continent.

Thanks very much to the wonderful and capable people who translate materials for this list. One of the things about this list that I'm MOST proud of is the work we do to provide English-language translations of materials from the Cuban media. No other list that I'm aware of has made this a part of its mission. Readers who can translate more, please do get in touch. There's plenty of work to be done.

Subscribers who want to wish the list a "feliz cumpleano" or other greetings, now is a good time to do that. I thank each and every one of you for being part of the process

Seven Candles - Congratulations!

Dear Walter,

In Biology-related matters, seven years usually refers to issues described in their infancy. Seven years of an extraordinary hard, dedicated, informative, militant and revolutionary defense of Cuba, not only sets Cuba News apart from most other media outlets, it has placed itself squarely among those Big Leaguers, capable of providing a wide array of news pertaining to/or of interest to Cuba.

Some of its readers have complained for occasionally including some right-wing diatribe.? Cuba News readers can deal with those open or covert articles intended to undermine the Cuban people. The maturity, intellect and historical knowledge of most of your readers, allow each of them to read, analyze and identify their intent.

For some who have left, we encourage them to return, to contribute their views, to share their opinion, to defend their views and make this outlet stronger.

On behalf of most of your readers, I wish to congratulate Walter for not tiring, for standing tall against his detractors and for keeping this alternative media alive and growing.

Happy Seventh Anniversary Cuba News!!

Congratulations to Cuba News on entering its eighth year of existence. Hope this helps!

Sometimes, I must confess, it’s almost too much for an old man like me to keep up with! But do keep it up nonetheless. There are younger, more energetic, readers out there. Many congratulations!

ROSS ANDERSON, London, UK
Congratulations on the seventh birthday of the CubaNews list.

I'm a journalist in London. I married a Cuban in 2001 and began looking for
an independent source of news and information about the island that wasn't
filtered through semi-literate hacks paid by the CIA, swivel-eyed,
spittle-flecked octogeniarian exiles on Calle Ocho or blinkered Fidelistas
who think the sun shines out of El Jefe's posterior and the old reprobate
can do no wrong.

I was delighted when I found the list. Like me, it is sympathetic to the
aims and achievements of the Cuban Revolution, but doesn't turn a blind eye
to the problems: and Walter is that rare thing, a genuine independent
journalist and observer.

Keep up the good work, and here's to the next seven years.

Best wishes,
ROSS

CubaNews  is unique in many ways --  most importantly its policy of publishing  and therefore archving in an accessible place as much news,  information, and analysis of Cuban life and politics as made possible  by the dedication of its supporters. And including information  reflective of different points of view, including enemies of the Cuban  revolution and its marxist leadership.I am sure people who do not read  Spanish especially appreciate the many translations offered on the site.

Dear Walter,

You deserve a great revolutionary hug for carrying on with CubaNews. It is important work to communicate exactly what is happening in (and to) Cuba, and it should be read by many more people. As a person who takes the digest rather than individual messages because of the volume of mail I get, I can be bothered by seeing many of these digests appear per day--- but then I find some pearls there that can't be found anywhere else! Keep up the good work and especially the invaluable translations of Cuban discussions that you are providing. I hope you can find more volunteers to do translations.

And your leadership has created the space to make that possible!

Dear Walter and CubaNews Friends,

My know time flies! CubaNews is seven years old this week. It's been around longer than GW's been president -- and hopefully long after that monster is gone.

What an amazing job Walter has done. He's a yeoman and a journalist of the best caliber.

I was updating my personal information on the CubaNews Yahoo site today and noted the group was founded on August 26, 2000. I can't remember how long I've been a member. However I have saved nearly every message dispatched since December 24, 2001. I use them as a resource and reference for my Cuba work.

Walter's contributions and those of others on the list have been indispensable for Cuba Education Tours. Sending folks to Cuba isn't easy as things change constantly: rules and regulations plus the natural and political climate. CubaNews is always there -- like a good friend -- to keep me abreast of issues I need to pass on to island travelers.

Thanks Walter and all who contribute to CubaNews. Here's to another eight great years.

Yours in Vancouver,

Seven years! Each year for the last seven CubaNews has evolved to do more than it did the year before. The postings, including critical comments by its editor and other contributors, continue to undo the blockade on information and analysis about what the Cubans are doing and thinking. CubaNews presents the successes as well as the problems of Cuba and its revolution. Your reporting on Cuba from Cuba is invaluable.

I appreciate the growing attention of CubaNews to the environmental and climatic problems the world faces, and about how the Cubans study, analyze and take adaptive measures for the present and for the future.

Today is the second commemoration of Hurricanes Katrina then Rita, manmade disasters from known natural phenomena. I remember at CubaNews reading about the well-drilled and life saving Cuban response to the hurricanes, both on the island and their offers of aid the US. At Cuba News I read of the efforts of the just formed Henry Reeve Brigade to send 1500 hurricane-experienced medical personnel to the US hurricane-hit areas. In the so-called main stream press there was hardly a mention of the Cuban solidarity with the US. CubaNews put it up and in detail.

Dear Cuba/News

I learned about CubaNews through Walter Lippmann, whom I first knew in the 1960s when we were anti-war and pro-socialist activists in Los Angeles, albeit in separate camps. Fortunately, most everyone in the various leftist camps throughout the world join in compassion and support for the world's most progressive, most humanitarian and most socialist of all the attempts at changing society from capitalism to socialism.

Cuba is an inspiration to decency and gaiety, to equality and justice. And because it is that The Big One endeavors to destroy it. CubaNews is a unique and most helpful instrument in the defense of Cuba while exposing the double morality and brutality of the US monster.

Subject: [CubaNews] CubaNews list is one of the best and most useful sources ...

Walter Lippmann's CubaNews list is one of the best and most useful sources for news about Cuba. It combines being up-to-date with the latest news culled from major mainstream media in the US and abroad, with being an archive for important issues for which it is difficult to find meaningful information, such as the situation of Gays in Cuba.  Walter brings both a left (but nonsectarian) perspective and a sense of realism in his own reports and observations, which richly supplement what others have reported. This is an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to learn more (& more accurate) information about Cuba than is widely presented by the U.S. media.

One can only imagine how much work this has been. We don't know how you do it, but may you keep on with this so valuable service. It took a while for some of us to "get" it, but your just-about-anything-goes policy has worked well. It is important to know what *everyone* says, in order to be informed, and act intelligently. Take time to rest your eyes once in a while, Walter!

Saludos,

Congratulations!

Dear Walter and All the Folks at Cuba News,

Warm greetings and congratulations on the 7th Anniversary of your service. You
provide an invaluable contribution to anyone interested in learning about Cuban
reality, but more specifically to the Cuba solidarity movement and everyone
fighting to end the US economic and political war. Your output is comprehensive
to the point of overwhelming, but always to be found are documents, analyses,
interviews, speeches, and articles that deepen our consciousness and aid us in
the struggle. This includes keeping us informed of the views and contradictions
of the Cuban Revolution's enemies across the imperialist political spectrum.
Finally, I applaud your non-sectarian editorial policy which allows many points
of view to be seen and debated.

Dear aficionados of CubaNews,

This marks Seven Years of Good Luck for those of us who would like to keep up with every article about Cuba published everywhere in the world, but who don’t have 4 to 6 hours every morning before dawn to comb the World-Wide-Web. I say we are lucky because in seven years Walter Lippmann has developed a routine that not only scans many well-known national and international news sources, but is constantly on the look out for obscure, and burgeoning resources that often prove to foretell an important change in the world outlook toward our precious island nation.

Sometimes we have the opportunity to read articles that have not yet hit the streets. Occasionally a pertinent commentary about teen pregnancy, or Cuba relief workers to helping to defeat diseases caused by disasters in countries friendly to Cuba’s enemies will be published in Spanish. Before the article hits the streets Walter has already had it translated into English and sent out to CubaNews.

Thank you, Walter, we will be with you and the Cuban people now and in the future. The Los Angeles Coalition in Solidarity with Cuba is proud to call you, compañero. ¡Siempre Adelante¡

Paula Solomon, Los Angeles, CA
