A smile in the dark
(Regarding the Atlanta Appellate Court decision on the Five)

Honestly, we never expected it. They have submitted us to so much injustice, the current United States administration has tried so hard to inflict chronic hopelessness and so much concentrated hatred by those authorities against the Cuban revolution, that August 9 was a true miracle for our people.

The first press reports reaching us about our solidarity brothers in the United States, were unbelievable messages ... the trial had been revoked ... a new trial was to be held. With this decision ... the sentences were revoked! It was hard to believe! That moment, if just for a second, before we returned to common sense, we wanted to embrace everything around us; kiss our dog; bless the three judges for having given justice. Perhaps, at that moment, we looked differently and with a small dose of faith, on the Statue of Liberty. The document released by the Eleventh Circuit Appellate Court of Atlanta refers to the revocation of the trial held in Miami. There, where the Cuban émigrés are kidnapped, through lies and lack of knowledge, little justice can be given. If it was a dream … we did not want to wake up.

But it was true. It was as if the legal system, with this news, wanted to repair those seven years when it seemed that time would be our enemy. The story of that agony would become known. Decency was probable!

Now, at least, we can dream. Dream that Gerardo and that beautiful Adriana could be confident on behalf of a baby that injustice prevents its fruition; that Rene, in addition to looking into the immensity of Ivette's eyes could admire the marvelous woman in whom the daughter Irmita has become, through so much pain. Dream that Fernando can embrace his delicate wife here in Havana, looking at his mother with pleasure, a woman who has became a great orator. And Ramon could watch his daughters in a hot beach and his wife who seems more innocent than a flower. With Antonio … we could dream of listening to those airy poems that seem to escape through our windows, verse by verse, and watch Mirta smile without so much sadness. We could dream about all of that because of an honest decision that sparked hope again.

Because it was not only the injustice of sentencing innocents deprived of looking at the sea; there are collateral injustices like the one announced by our sister Graciela Ramírez, international organizer of the International Solidarity Committee for the Cuban Five. Injustices such as the months of isolation, bad treatment, geographic separation. They not only had to pay the price for daring to defend my country from criminal actions, but also made their families suffer other unwritten sentences; and also all the Cubans and good persons around the world, with whom we have shared this pain. This decision seemed to stop, for a second, malevolence in the Earth.

On the other hand, the Atlanta judges have implicitly decreed in their resolution that it is practically impossible to try honest Cubans since this case (with God's help) will establish a legal precedence. So, then, it is a starting point … just that, only a starting point.

Of course, we will soon awake from that dream, because it is merely a smile: good news in the framework of the most obstinate darkness. We should not believe that the rest is going be along easy street. Of course, the incoherence of the Mafia cupola of Cuban organizations in Miami snarls and barks at us and then "will ride on". And it is strange that the United States government, accusers of our five young men, has not yet appealed. Oh yes. The bonds of the current administration with the Cuban-American Mafia and the favors they owe each other, must keep us vigilant and acutely measure the next legal or political thrust of the enemy.

It's still not time to open the champagne. Quite the contrary: our battle now will have to be stronger and more obstinate.

That is what our brilliant lawyers have told us, many who are members of the defense team. Skillfully they await the new step and wait for the answer of the prosecution that still has several weeks to decide what to do.

We don't have time. The truth of the Five should be a campaign for their immediate release and return to Cuba. In fact, today the United States should free them. They are technically free but are still in jail. We must not keep quiet, nor stop sharpening our pencils.

Just like when truth has allies, an opportune communication should be our battle cry. To say it and repeat it in all languages and in song and verse, novel and music, passionately shout: The Five should be released! Because they have been declared innocent; otherwise we must sue the U.S. government for an act that smells of kidnapping. Now, a slight thread of truth has begun to unravel and what we must do is to unravel the skein before the government appeals the decision. These weeks that the U.S. government has to decide on whether or not to appeal, we should use to request their return and, above all, to reveal the intrigues and filth behind their unmerited sentences.

Lastly, I want to share a thought with all of you. But specially with my comrades, friends and acquaintances or not, of the radical left wing parties because there are times when I feel that the internationalist cause of the Cuban Five is not understood. The Five are not only innocent of the crimes for which they were condemned to unbelievable sentences. No. These five men are symbols of the permanent battle of the Cuban revolution that is part of the world revolution. Those who honestly worry about the perpetuation of this veteran revolution can observe that we are not fighting today for prisoners of the attack on the Moncada garrison; we are not going back in history. The Five are our battle comrades, because they are fighting the worse enemies of our ideas.

If there were a pestilence of U.S. imperialism, if there is an enemy of world socialism, it is precisely the Mafia connection of the Cuban cupola of southern Florida with the Miami administration that not only commits vandalic acts of sabotage against our innocent people and where this part of the exile community suffers ideological terrorism. They intend to install the worst capitalism in the island with the worst methods of murderers. What they want, with the buddies in government and all internal allies is to move towards the most reactionary system possible and in the worse manner. In this case the ends and the means walk hand in hand.

Our five comrades are not only innocent or brave or honest; they are above any other consideration, internationalist revolutionaries kidnapped at the time of writing this, by the greatest enemy that world history has faced.

Una sonrisa en la oscuridad

De verdad no lo pensamos nunca. Nos han sometido por años a tanta injusticia; se ha esmerado tanto la última administración de Estados Unidos en hacernos padecer de desesperanza crónica y es tanto el odio concentrado el que se destila desde esas autoridades hacia la revolución cubana, que el día 9 de agosto constituyó para nuestro pueblo un verdadero milagro.

Las primeras noticias que nos llegaban de nuestros hermanos de solidaridad en los Estados Unidos eran mensajes insólitos...había sido revocado el juicio... había que realizar un nuevo juicio Con eso... ¡eran revocadas las sentencias! ¡No era posible de creer! En aquel instante, por tan sólo un segundo, mucho antes que la cordura volviera a apoderarse de nosotros, quisimos todos abrazar los muebles cercanos, besar a nuestro perro y bendecir a los tres jueces por haber  impartido justicia. Quizás tan sólo en ese breve tiempo  vimos con otra mirada y con una pequeña dosis de fe a la Estatua de la Libertad. En el documento concluido  por el Tribunal de Apelaciones del Onceno Circuito de Atlanta  se proclama la impertinencia del juicio celebrado en Miami. Allí donde está secuestrada la emigración cubana por la mentira y la incultura  son pocas las cosas justas que pueden hacerse . Si era un sueño...no queríamos despertar.

Pero fue verdad. Pudiera parecer que el sistema judicial nos quiso reparar con esta noticia estos siete años durante los cuales parecería que el tiempo sería nuestro enemigo. La historia de aquel calvario empezaría por conocerse ¡Parecía probable esperar decencia!   

Ahora se nos permitía al menos soñar. Soñar con que Gerardo y la bellísima Adriana  pensarán con más confianza en el nombre de un bebé que la injusticia niega a la creación, en que  René, además de ver la inmensidad de la miradita de Ivette, podría admirar a la mujer maravillosa en que se ha convertido su hija Irmita a fuerzas de tanto dolor. Soñar que Fernando podría  abrazar a su esposa delicada acá en La Habana viendo con placer a su madre , convertida en gran oradora. Y así sucesivamente Ramón podría ver a sus hijas en una playa hirviente y a su mujer que parece más inocente que una flor. Con  Antonio... podríamos soñar todos  en escucharle su voz en esos poemas alados que parecen que se escapan verso a verso por nuestras ventanas y  ver sonreír a Mirta sin tanta tristeza. En todo eso podríamos soñar tan sólo por una decisión honesta, que volvió a encendernos la esperanza.

Pues ya no es tan sólo la injusticia  de sentenciar  a  inocentes tener que olvidarse  del mar; existen las injusticias  colaterales tal como anunció nuestra hermana Graciela Ramírez, coordinadora del Comité Internacional de Solidaridad con los Cinco en Cuba. Injusticias tal como el aislamiento durante meses enteros, los maltratos, la dispersión geográfica. Incluso no sólo le hacían pagar el precio a ellos por atreverse a defender a mi país de los ataques criminales, sino que  hacían sufrir a sus familias de otras condenas no escritas en ningún papel y también a todos  los cubanos y los hombres buenos del mundo, que  aprendimos a compartir ese dolor. Esta decisión pareció detener por un segundo la maldad en la Tierra

Por otra parte los jueces de Atlanta han manifestado implícitamente a través de su resolución que en Miami es prácticamente imposible juzgar de manera imparcial a los cubanos honestos, ya que este caso (si Dios decide ayudarnos) pasará a ser un antecedente judicial. Es entonces  un buen punto de partida...Mas tan sólo eso, apenas un punto de partida.

Eso sí: despertemos pronto de esta leve ensoñación, pues es tan sólo una  sonrisa: una buena noticia en el marco de la más obstinada oscuridad. No debemos creer que ya todo será ahora pan comido. Es más, el pan está todavía por hornear. Por supuesto la incoherencia de la cúpula mafiosa de las organizaciones cubanas en Miami nos ofrece la señal aquella de que “ladran” y entonces  “cabalgamos”. Y empieza a resultar extraño  que el gobierno de Estados Unidos,  querellante contra nuestros cinco jóvenes, no haya presentado todavía su apelación. Eso sí. La ligazón de la administración actual con esa mafia cubano-americana y los favores mutuos que se deben, nos tiene que poner en perenne vigilia y calibrar  con mucha agudeza la próxima estocada  legal  o política del enemigo.

No es hora todavía  de descorchar botellas. Todo lo contrario: la batalla que demos ahora tendrá que ser todavía más fuerte y más obstinada.

De eso han dado fe  los abogados brillantes, muchos de ellos miembros del equipo de defensa. Con gran pericia aguardan el nuevo paso, y esperan la respuesta de la fiscalía, la cual tiene todavía unas semanas para decidir que hacer.

Carecemos de tiempo. La verdad de los Cinco deberá convertirse en una campaña para que sean liberados de inmediato y regresen a Cuba. De hecho en este momento los Estados Unidos deberían liberarlos. Son técnicamente libres y los mantienen en sus celdas. No debemos apagar nuestras voces, ni dejar de  afilar nuestro lápiz.

Como ocurre cuando la verdad se tiene por aliada, la comunicación oportuna  debe ser nuestra  arma de combate. Decirlo, y decirlo en todos los idiomas, y decirlo en canción y en verso y en novela y en música; gritar esta verdad de manera apasionada ¡Los Cinco deben ser excarcelados!, pues han sido declarado inocentes, en caso contrario debíamos nosotros demandar al gobierno norteamericano...por algo bien parecido al secuestro.  

En este momento se desató un hilo de verdad y la función nuestra es deshilachar toda la madeja. Y esta madeja debiera desatarse antes que el gobierno apele la decisión. Estas semanas que tiene el Gobierno norteamericano para decidir si apelan o no, empleémoslo ya  en solicitar que  ellos regresen,  y sobre todo en desenmascarar toda la intriga y la suciedad que estuvieron detrás de sus injustas condenas.

Por último una reflexión que deseo compartir con todos. Pero especialmente con mis camaradas, amigos, conocidos o no de los partidos de toda la izquierda radical, pues a veces ciento que no se comprende del todo la causa internacionalista de los cinco compañeros cubanos. Los Cinco no son solamente  inocentes de los delitos por los que los condenaron a irrepetibles sanciones. No. Estos cinco hombres hacen patente la permanencia de la lucha de la revolución cubana, que es parte de la revolución del mundo. Aquellos que se preocupan honestamente por la perdurabilidad de esta veterana revolución, pueden ver que no estamos luchando el día de hoy  por presos que cumplían sanción  por el asalto al Cuartel Moncada, que no estamos evocando nuestra historia. Los Cinco son nuestros camaradas de lucha, pues están luchando contra el peor de los enemigos de nuestras ideas. Si existe una verruga pestilente del Imperialismo norteamericano, si es que existe un enemigo para el socialismo mundial: ese es precisamente la conexión mafiosa de la cúpula cubana del sur de la Florida con la actual administración  de Miami, que no sólo comete terrorismo en sus vandálicos actos de sabotaje contra un pueblo inocente, sino que esta parte del exilio padece de terrorismo ideológico. Pretenden restaurar el peor capitalismo en la isla con los peores métodos de los asesinos. El fin  que buscan ellos, sus socios del gobierno y todos sus aliados internos es transitar hacia el más reaccionario de los sistemas posibles y de la peor forma. En este caso fin y los medios caminan juntos.

Nuestros cinco compañeros son no sólo inocentes o valientes u honrados, son por encima de cualquier otra consideración, revolucionarios internacionalistas secuestrados en este momento que les escribo, por el  mayor enemigo que ha tenido la historia del mundo.
